BRASILIA – The Ministry of Health published on Thursday a list of guidelines on Covid-19 in which it recommends: “If you can, stay home.” The list of actions directed at the population is found in material on vaccination strategy distributed to the press during a press conference.

“Avoid unnecessary traffic on the streets. If you can, stay home,” the folder guides. There are other recommendations, such as staying two meters from people with symptoms, avoiding physical contact and taking care of eating.

The “Stay Home” message, popularized during the administration of former Minister Luiz Henrique Mandetta, is a recurring target of criticism from President Jair Bolsonaro. He was always against a broader social isolation as a way to prevent Covid-19 considering the damage to the economy.

Since the Ministry of Health was managed by the current Minister Eduardo Pazuello, an active general appointed by Bolsonaro to the position, the ministry has avoided defending social isolation as a preventive measure against Covid-19.

Last Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reinforced on Twitter that “our greatest action against the virus is social isolation and adherence to individual protection measures.” An hour later, the message was deleted by the folder, which said “human error” in the post.

The message was a response from the portfolio to an Internet user. In addition to defending isolation, the post clarified that so far there are no medicines, vaccines or food to prevent or end the new coronavirus. Bolsonaro, in turn, defends the use of drugs without scientific evidence to combat the disease, such as chloroquine.
