Without the video, Michel Zecler believes his case would have been reduced to, at best, a short story. Maybe something like this: “A young black man, dressed in a sweatshirt and hoodie, assaulted the police and tried to take their guns,” Zecler said in an interview Thursday.

“If I didn’t have my cameras, I’d be in jail today,” he added, referring to the security cameras in the building where he keeps his music studio.

Footage from these cameras shows police officers beating up 41-year-old Zecler, a well-known producer in the French rap world, without charge and helped fuel a political crisis in France. The episode drew attention to the issue of police brutality, especially against minorities, and sparked massive protests, which on Saturday ended with nearly 100 detainees. (…)
