OR Flamengo faces Racing-ARG, with live broadcast of Fox Sports, at 9:30 p.m. (Brasilia time), for more than one place in the quarterfinals of the Conmebol Libertadores. Tuesday’s game also represents a lot for the red and black planning for 2021.
Is that, facing a year very impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Flamengo also suffers economically, a season after registering the record of income from Brazilian football. All the targets set at the end of 2019 had to change.
The club already knows, for example, that it is unlikely that it will reach R $ 726.2 million in revenue, as was initially planned in the budget. Until September 2020, revenues were R $ 509.5 million, with almost all sources of cash inflows below expectations.
Among the impacts on the field, the elimination only in the quarterfinals of the Brazil Cup had an important weight, since a good prize in money was interposed. Libertadores, then, begins to have even more representation thinking about finances.
Flamengo plays today and can guarantee US $ 1.5 million (almost R $ 8 million at the current price) with Wednesday’s qualification. The goal in the budget is to go further, until the semifinals, which would guarantee another US $ 2 million (R $ 10.5 million). The title is worth US $ 15 million (R $ 79 million).
Flamengo’s initial forecast was to earn R $ 282.8 million in 2020 with money and television prizes. The problem is that the contests still in progress will only end in 2021, that is, the total collection will only be completed in the next fiscal year.
No brazilian championship, for example, although Rogério Ceni’s team has a title chance, the final payment still depends, in addition to the classification in the table, on the number of games broadcast. Thus, most of the money will not hit the coffers until next year.
The return of the public to the stadiums is also another unlikely factor for 2020. Among the partner-fans, the box office and the Maracana, Flamengo even projected R $ 204.4 million in the year. Until September, only R $ 81.1 million with this source of income.
The only segment in which Flamengo was not below what it predicted before the pandemic was the sale of players. In fact, it even exceeded the initial goal of R $ 80 million, making R $ 221.1 million in the third quarter, almost half of everything collected.
The problem is that sales alone were not enough to prevent Flamengo from reaching the last months of the year in the red, that is, spending more than it earned: a deficit of R $ 19.8 million. Expenditures on social and sports activities were R $ 433.7 million, the rest is complemented with administrative expenses.
In football, the impact of the economic moment is already felt, for example, in the renewal of goalkeeper Diego Alves, who came to advance an agreement with the football leadership, but his success was blocked by the values involved.
Flamengo still has other important expenses ahead, thinking about the 2021 planning, the main one being the purchase of forward Pedro, loaned by Fiorentina until December. The acquisition price is 12 million euros (R $ 75.8 million).
To guarantee US $ 1.5 million this Tuesday, Flamengo needs a simple victory against Racing in Maracanã, after having tied the first game 1 to 1. The goalless equality also classifies the Brazilians, while the leaderboards of 2 to 2 favor visitors.
