The deputy governor of Rio Grande do Sul and Secretary of Public Security of the State, Ranolfo Vieira Júnior (PTB), described as “horrifying” the images that show a black man being attacked by a security guard and a temporary military policeman in the parking lot of Carrefour. in Porto Alegre. “This fact we are going to verify ad nauseam, we cannot admit actions of this nature. The images are shocking, the Public Security of our state will do everything possible for their total clarification,” he wrote on a social network.
Away from the positive diagnosis of covid-19, Ranolfo said he was in direct contact with the Military Brigade to monitor the case.
The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), also condemned the attitude of the security guards and said that the case will be investigated.
“Unfortunately, on this date when we must celebrate public policies and advances in the fight for racial equality, we are faced with scenes that outraged us because of the excess of violence that led to the death of a black citizen,” said Leite . “To the relatives and friends of the victim, João Freitas, all our solidarity and the certainty that the investigation will be rigorous so that there is a consequence of this regrettable act,” he added.
Videos with images of the assault have been circulating on social media since last night. The victim, identified as João Alberto Silveira Freitas, allegedly argued with the store’s cashier and was taken by the store’s security guard to the parking lot on the lower floor. A client, an interim military policeman, accompanied the displacement, which culminated in the beatings of Freitas.
The security guard and the acting prime minister were arrested on suspicion of intentional homicide. The police are waiting for the expert report and more images from the camera to clarify the case. The investigation continues with the 2nd DHPP (Homicide and Personal Protection Police Station).
In a note, Carrefour reported that it broke the contract with the security company and will close the store. In addition, he stated that “he will adopt the appropriate measures to hold those involved in this criminal act responsible.”
The Military Brigade, for its part, said that it had arrested the attackers and that it would investigate the conduct of the interim PM, who was not on duty at the time of the attacks.
