Germany’s Covid-19 vaccination campaign was overshadowed by an incident in the north of the country when eight nursing home workers overdosed.

District officials in West Pomerania-Rugia said Stralsund city officials received five times the recommended dose of the BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine on Sunday. Four were hospitalized for observation after developing flu-like symptoms.

“I deeply regret the incident. This individual case is due to individual errors. I hope that all those affected do not experience serious side effects,” District Chief Stefan Kerth said in a statement.

The incident came after some German districts refused to use the vaccines delivered over the weekend due to suspicions that their refrigeration was disrupted during delivery.

West Pomerania-Rugia officials highlighted earlier reports from BioNtech that larger doses were tested in the early-stage study without serious consequences.

BioNTech noted the vaccine package insert, which says that in case of overdose, monitoring of vital functions is recommended and possible symptomatic treatment is recommended.
