After postponing the purchase of syringes for vaccination against covid-19, President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) said today that the Ministry of Health has suspended the acquisition of the material “until prices return to normal.”
Without giving details, he added that the states and municipalities have stocks of the material for the start of immunization.
Last week, the Ministry of Health failed in its first attempt to buy syringes and needles for immunization. Of the 331 million units that the portfolio intends to buy, it was only able to offer 7.9 million units on the electronic trading floor. The number corresponds to approximately 2.4% of the total units you wanted to buy. For manufacturers, the prices presented by the government were “extremely out of step with reality.”
“As there was interest from the Ministry of Health in acquiring syringes for its regulatory stock, prices shot up and the Ministry of Health suspended purchases until prices returned to normal,” the president wrote on a social network.
“The states and municipalities have stocks of syringes for the start of vaccinations, since the number of vaccines at the beginning is not large.”
The purchase of syringes and needles is generally done by the states and municipalities. However, during the pandemic, the ministry decided to centralize these supplies.
After the failure in the first purchase attempt, the portfolio reported last Monday (4) that it was preparing new auctions to acquire the supplies, with bidding forecasts still in January, according to a report by Folha de S.Paulo.
Wanted, the ministry did not comment on the president’s statement.
– Brazil consumes 300 million syringes a year. We are also one of the largest manufacturers of this material. – I like it…

Health negotiates the requisition of excess stock
The Ministry of Health also requested surplus stocks of these products in the national industry. The expectation is to guarantee the delivery of 30 million units in January.
In addition to requisitioning stocks, the federal government also restricted the export of products.
In institutional profiles on social networks, the ministry described as “fake news” the news about the government’s performance in the search for syringes. The national hospital products industry has been alerting the ministry since July about the need to plan the purchase of these supplies.
Abimo (Brazilian Association of the Medical and Dental Equipment and Equipment Industry) says there will be no shortage of syringes in Brazil for vaccination against covid-19.
According to the companies, there is an interval of 30 to 45 days between the purchase and the delivery of the material, but it is possible to reorder stocks to reduce this period.
Bolsonaro’s post on Wednesday surprised the association. “We had a meeting on Monday (4) with the Ministry of Health, and this issue had not been discussed,” he told the Twitter Paulo Henrique Fraccaro, Superintendent of Abimo. “But yes, the next trading session would be on the air between one and two weeks and with the updated reference price.”
Fraccaro says he doesn’t know if the president’s position could affect the covid-19 vaccination plan. “I can’t even say that because if the states have a stock of syringes, they will not be under control,” he says, making it clear that he has no information on federal and state government stocks.
The superintendent also notes that prices should not return to normal anytime soon. “There is natural inflation when demand increases.”
Arrival and approval of vaccines
The federal government is working on the possibility of the arrival, even this month, of the vaccine from the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, carried out in partnership with the University of Oxford. In Brazil, the production will be in charge of Fiocuz (Oswaldo Cruz Foundation), with a forecast of 210 million doses in 2021. Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) has already approved the importation of 2 million doses of the immunizer.
In São Paulo, Governor João Doria (PSDB) promises to start vaccination on the 25th, with CoronaVac, a vaccine developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac in association with the Butantan Institute, which is being produced in the city of São Paulo. The state administration says it has already purchased 71 million syringes and needles for immunization; the figure represents 71% of the initial prognosis of the toucan.
In order for vaccines to be administered, Anvisa’s approval is required. So far, the agency has not registered any vaccine against covid-19.
