After beating and suffocating Beto Freitas, 40, at a Carrefour store in Porto Alegre, company employees spent minutes trying to find out if he was alive, he told the leaf the motoboy who filmed the assault and murder.
The courier, who asked that his name not be published for security reasons, went to look for purchases made by application to deliver them to a customer. After placing the bags in the trunk of the motorcycle, about to leave the place, he saw the beginning of the beating session.
“I told a colleague, also a messenger: Record this. I also took my phone. It was a lot of shock, ”he said. It was this motoboy who produced the images spread by social networks and press vehicles that first drew public attention to the murder, even on the night of the corner (19), when it occurred.
According to the motoboy, he began filming to prevent the beating from continuing, as a way to shame the assailants to stop the beatings. “There was a lot of blood on the ground. I told you I was filming. A girl came from there, who later learned to be a Carrefour inspector, threatening me. He said he was going to burn me in the store if I continued, ”he said.
After that, another supermarket employee intimidated the motoboy into stopping filming. “I was freaking out and put the phone down. But he was trying to explain to them that they had to stop. They began to coerce and pressure me. I dropped the phone and talked to the inspector for a while, “he said.
“She said: if you calm him down, I’ll take everyone off of him. But he didn’t, he didn’t.”
The messenger says that, at that moment, the Carrefour inspector injured his hand, saying that Beto had cut his finger. “She took his nail and began to force it onto her finger. It hadn’t hurt, I looked good. It struck me that she tried to injure her hand, “he said.
According to the delivery man, Beto was asking for help. “Help me, help me,” he said he listened. “I even approached to try to help, but the security guards did not let me or Mrs. Milena, who was pushed. They didn’t put pressure on me, but she did, ”he said about the widow, Milena Borges Alves.
According to the witness, the two times he tried to get close to Beto, she heard him ask for help. “It was a sound, when I asked for help, like I had a liquid in my mouth, maybe blood. It was a different sound, I cannot explain it, it was not the normal voice, he received many blows in the mouth, he cut his chin. They did a lot of damage, what they did was disproportionate, “he said.
He says he heard Milena yelling, “You’re going to kill my husband.” “She was terrified and started crying,” he said.
The delivery man says that more market employees came to the scene. What seemed to them that Beto was calming down was actually him dying, he reports.
“It was turning purple,” he said. “You killed him, I said. One of the employees asked if anyone knew how to measure the pulse, ”he says. According to the delivery man, the employees began trying to find out if Beto was alive.
“Measure the pulse?” Says the motoboy who asks with disgust. He heard the other delivery man say, “He’s dead.” The messenger said that he tried to calm Milena, telling the woman that Samu would be arriving soon to take care of Beto.
Carrefour’s security camera videos show that security guards suffocated Beto Freitas for almost four minutes.
The delivery man says he has not been able to sleep well since he witnessed the murder and feared reprisals when he discovered that one of the guards was also a policeman.
The motoboy states that he did not hear racist crimes against Beto, but that he agrees that there is structural racism and cites an example that occurred with the same name as Carrefour:
“One day I was giving birth there and I saw a boy being escorted by the guards. I asked him what had happened. ‘Nothing. They told me I was taking too long and told me to leave. He was messy, he was a street vendor and he took a change to eat cheese bread and have coffee ”.
