He came in? São Paulo’s goal against Goiás generates controversy | Brasileirão Serie A

A very controversial play marked the first part of the match between São Paulo and Goiás, this Saturday, in Morumbi. In the 25th minute, when the visitors were leading 1-0, Tricolor was tied with Brenner. But the question remained: did the ball go in?

Goalkeeper Tadeu, from Goiás, defends a Brenner header over the head. The field referee, on the spot, scores. And the VAR, in the verification, maintained the initial decision, that is, it did not find a video that showed that the ball had not entered.

Paulo César de Oliveira, commentator for Central do Apito, explained that the VAR must keep the field mark if it is not sure that the decision was incorrect.

– The assistant raises the flag, because first he informs the referee that the ball entered and then runs towards the midfield. It’s okay. (…) We don’t have a conclusive picture as to whether the ball actually went in. When the field assistant scored the goal, the VAR respects the decision. I would only change the decision if I could demonstrate, through an image, that the ball did not enter. As it does not have a strong image, the decision of the playing field is worth it – he explained.
