Manaus – In response to the request for help made by the mayor of Manaus, Arthur Virgílio Neto, Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, along with 12 other climate activists from different parts of the world who are part of Fridays for the future movement, released a letter open and a video on Thursday (14), asking for global support to help Amazonas in the fight against Covid-19.

“These 13 young environmentalists join us and cry out for help, as they understand the importance of ensuring that the traditional peoples of the Amazon are not eliminated by the new coronavirus. We will fight to the end and we will not rest until we win this war against Covid-19, ”wrote the mayor of Manaus, while sharing the movement’s publication.

Greta begins the video by saying that Manaus is the heart of the Amazon rainforest, and activist João Duccini adds that the capital of Amazonas is the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic in the region. Activists reinforce that the health system is already collapsing and ask that world leaders, especially from places that have already overcome the disease, can collaborate to save the Amazon.

“It was an SOS request and I knew Greta would respond maturely. I am very grateful for the sensitivity of these young people, who think about the future of the planet and know the contribution of our forest to the climate problem. I hope that world leaders can help us save the lives of forest defenders, “said Arthur Neto, adding that any help that may come, through the movement led by Greta,” will be shared with municipalities in the interior of the Amazon, especially those that concentrate indigenous populations.

In the open letter, on Fridays for the future movement highlights the report of the mayor of Manaus on the increase in the number of burials in the city due to the pandemic, which reached more than 100 per day. “Public authorities in the heart of the Amazon have issued a cry for help to the world, which cannot be ignored: countries that have already recovered their health systems in this crisis, have mercy and avoid the massive death of people in the Amazon. Manaus asks for respirators, medical equipment, qualified personnel, volunteers, ”says an excerpt from the letter.

Activists reinforce that, in addition to serving the population itself, Manaus is a reference service for neighboring cities, which ends up overloading the health system. To reduce this impact, the Manaus City Council is already working in association with the Samel group and the Transire institute, to provide the same procedures that the Gilberto Novaes municipal campaign hospital is using for cities in the interior of the Amazon. One of these protocols is the “Vanessa” capsule, which allows the patient to recover without the need for an orotracheal intubation.

Greta and the other activists, Brazilians and from other parts of the world, such as Portugal and New Zealand, recorded the video in English and closed the message asking in Portuguese: “Save the Amazon!”.
