Grêmio, with one less, pulls Sport’s tie for Brasileirão

Sport and Grêmio faced each other today (19), in the Ilha do Retiro, in a match valid for the 26th round of the Brazilian Championship, and tied 1 to 1. The score, built with goals from Dalberto and Pepê, was not the best for both teams. It is worth mentioning that the visiting team played with one less from six minutes into the second half, when defender Kannemann was sent off.

The result brings Grêmio up provisionally to fourth position, however, as Palmeiras and Internacional meet today, the club will either drop to fifth or return to sixth position.

As for Sport, the team led by coach Jair Ventura missed the opportunity to secure three points at home and distance themselves from the relegation zone of Brasileirão.

In the next round, the tricolor gaucho faces Atlético Goianiense, but the team’s focus will be on the midweek match against São Paulo, valid for the semifinal of the Copa do Brasil. Sport will only play again on the 26th, when they visit Goiás, in a match valid for the 27th day of Brasileirão.

Taboo

Playing in their domains, Sport has good numbers against Grêmio. Before entering the field this weekend, Leão came from five straight games at home without losing to the rival (three wins and two draws), and the last loss was only in 2012. With the score on Saturday, the taboo increased for six games and can only be broken in 2021.

Grêmio moment

The team led by coach Renato Gaúcho arrived at today’s game in one of the most delicate moments of the season, as it had come from three straight games without winning and the elimination of Santos in the Libertadores.

The result leaves the team even more pressured for Wednesday’s match against São Paulo, valid for the Copa do Brasil.

Supporter awarded at The Best

Last Thursday, the sport stood out around the world, as the life story of fan Marivaldo Francisco da Silva won the Fifa Fan Award at the best event. In return, all the Leon players’ jerseys from today’s game had the name “Marivaldo” on the front and will be given to the player to do whatever he wants with them.

Thiago Neves meets Grêmio again

The match was also marked by the reunion between Thiago Neves and Grêmio, the team’s former midfielder. Curiously, the player’s last game for Rio Grande do Sul was exactly against Sport, who won on the occasion 2-1 in Porto Alegre.

Who did it well: Pepê

In addition to drawing the tie, hitting the penalty, the forward looked for spaces on the sides, especially in the second half. It wasn’t a top-tier match for the number 25 jersey, but it was precise and incisive enough to stand out.

Who went wrong: Kannemann

The experienced Grêmio defender played well below expectations. In addition to wasting time with the ball in some situations and appearing without confidence, Kannemann disappointed the team by taking the second yellow card six minutes into the second and hindering the reaction of the tricolor gaucho.

Sports performance

As expected, Sport played backwards, waiting for the opponent to make the decisions on the attack court. The strategy worked, as with 10 minutes of play Leão led the confrontation with a counterattack goal, and Grêmio was unable to disturb goalkeeper Luan Polli.

However, the lack of daring and the minimum score put all three points at risk, and an individual error generated the rival’s tie.

Grêmio’s performance

The first part of Grêmio was not the best. The team managed to have a good time with ball possession, but struggled to create real scoring chances. There were few dangerous moments in favor of the visitors in the first 45 minutes.

The second stage was more complicated with the expulsion of defender Kannemann. However, curiously playing with one less changed the attitude of the Rio Grande do Sul team, which tied with Pepê, from the penalty spot, and was more aggressive in the offensive sector than when it had 11 players.

Game timeline

Due to the position in the table, the match already indicated that Grêmio would seek possession of the ball to command the confrontation and not give space to the owners of the house. However, everything changed after nine minutes, when Sport opened the scoring after a fatal counterattack by Lucas Mugni. The Argentine carried the ball across the field and opened it on the right to Patric, who returned it. The midfielder raised his head and crossed for striker Dalberto to fill the net defended by Vanderlei.

In the play it was found that the defensive system of the team led by Renato Gaúcho was very disorganized, with the right side exposed and few men in the midfield to try to intercept a possible counterattack.

After the goal, Grêmio had 70% possession of the ball and almost all the players in the opposite field, but the difficulty of creation was clear, and it was what marked the first 45 minutes of the game.

In the first minutes of the second half, it seemed that the script would be similar, with Sport with a strong scorer and Grêmio trying to score with a good individual play. That is what happened, but more evident, since the Tricolor was left with one less player at six minutes, after the expulsion of the experienced defender Kannemann, who already had a yellow card and stopped the counterattack of the premises.

Everything indicated that the hosts could maintain the result and take advantage of the fact of having an extra player, but a casual play put the visitors back in the game. At 24 minutes, Marcão ended up kicking Churin’s foot, who anticipated the play, and the referee scored a penalty for Grêmio, converted by Pepê.
