This Friday (11), the federal government published a decree that reduces to zero the Tax on financial operations (IOF) on credit operations contracted between December 15 and 31 of this year. The measure, therefore, comes into force next Tuesday (15).
The decree is signed by President Jair Bolsonaro and the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, and was published in an additional edition of the “Diário Oficial da União”. OR G1 questioned the government about the estimated impact on federal revenue and expects a refund.
For most of 2020, the IOF on lending operations was reduced to zero. The measure was announced in April, when the government launched several lines of credit to help individuals and companies cope with the economic crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In October, Bolsonaro even issued a decree that extended the zero IOF until December 31. But the following month, when announcing the exemption of electricity bills for Amapá residents affected by three weeks of blackout, the government charged the rate on credit again.
Government once again charged IOF in credit operations, in November, to exempt the electricity bill in Amapá
The return of the IOF was indicated by the economic team as a “compensatory measure” to finance the R $ 80 million, transferred by the Union to the Energy Development Account (CDE), which covered unpaid electricity bills.
