The spokesman for the Presidency of the Republic, General Otávio Santana do Rêgo Barros, was dismissed. The dismissal was published in the early morning edition of this Wednesday (7) of the “Official Diário da União (DOU)”, and was signed by the Prime Minister of the Civil House, Walter Souza Braga Netto.

ORDERS FROM OCTOBER 6, 2020

THE CHIEF MINISTER OF STATE OF THE CIVIL HOUSE OF THE PRESIDENCY OF THE REPUBLIC, in the use of his powers and in accordance with the provisions of art. 4 of Decree No. 9,794, of May 14, 2019, resolves:

OTÁVIO SANTANA DO RÊGO BARROS of the position of Spokesperson for the Presidency of the Republic of the Executive Secretariat of the Government Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, code DAS 101.6.

President Jair Bolsonaro had elected Major General Otávio Santana do Rêgo Barros as the government’s spokesman in January 2019.

Barros is an active military man, with experience in social communication and dealing with the press and a study plan that includes participation in the Mission of Peace in Haiti. He also directed the Army Social Communication Center, under the command of General Eduardo Villas Boas, succeeded in office by General Edson Leal Pujol.

In early May, Rêgo Barros, 59, contracted the new coronavirus and recovered.

At the end of August, the federal government reported that it will “deactivate” the position of spokesman for the Presidency of the Republic, a decision taken on the occasion of the edition of provisional measure 980/20, which the Communications Secretariat recreated.

During 2019, Rêgo Barros used to give daily interviews to the press, at the Planalto Palace, to detail Bolsonaro’s agenda and answer questions from the press.

In 2020, however, the so-called “daily briefing” was no longer held.
