The federal government announced, around 9:30 pm on Friday (18), that “confirms intention” to join the Covax Facility, a global program to advance the development of vaccines against Covid-19. The original registration deadline is until midnight this Friday. (See the full note at the end of this article.).

On Thursday (17), the country had asked the Global Vaccination Alliance (Gavi) to extend the deadline, which ends at midnight, to formalize its participation. The Secretariat of Social Communication informed the G1 that the deadline has been extended and that the confirmation of intention does not indicate that Brazil has already joined the program.

HE G1 contacted Gavi to confirm the extension of the deadline, but did not receive a response until the publication of this report.

On Thursday, the Reuters news agency learned from a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) that “several Latin American countries” have expressed their intention to request that the deadline be extended.

More than 170 countries have joined Covax, a global allocation of vaccines against the new coronavirus, which the WHO seeks to boost the development of vaccines to combat the Covid-19 pandemic, said the director general of the institution, Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“More than 170 countries have joined Covax, gaining guaranteed access to the world’s largest portfolio of vaccine candidates,” Tedros said, in pre-recorded comments at a webinar Thursday.

The director also asked countries to join the initiative. “I urge countries that have not yet joined Covax to do so before tomorrow’s deadline,” he said.
