Globoplay pay channels: why can’t everyone see them on TV? – 08/31/2020

Globoplay combined streaming with pay television and will offer, in addition to the on-demand content of series, soap operas and television programs already available, a series of channels with live transmission. But not everyone will be able to access this new Globoplay – which is being called by the company “Globoplay + live channels” – through SmartTV, only by cell phone or computer.

Among the new channels that will appear in the service, are the house (Multishow, GNT, GloboNews, SportTV, etc.) and the gringos Universal TV, Studio Universal, SyFy, Megapix, in addition to Canal Brasil – there will be, in total, 19 channels linear. The novelty will be available to subscribers of the current platform from tomorrow (1st), in an optional package that will cost R $ 49.90 per month compared to the current R $ 22.90 for the current model.

However, older televisions manufactured before 2015 are not expected to offer a full app experience for their users. The company said that Samsung TVs with the Tizen operating system and LG, with WebOS, made for 2015 will have a limited service offering. The reason is in the processors.

“In older televisions, the ones with a good processor are rare. The current ones tend to have better processors, but it is very likely that the cheapest ones that one of the low-cost elements is the processor,” said Erick Brêtas, director of Digital Products and Services. by Globo.

Subscribers, in this case, can view the new channels only on the Internet or in mobile applications, such as cell phones.

In addition to the hardware problem, Brêtas explains that even some newer TVs will also face problems because they do not have a DRM (Digital Right Management) system, which prevents the playback of unauthorized content. It says that for contractual reasons Globoplay will only be allowed on devices that support this technology.

“DRM is necessary for both domestic and international on-demand content, as well as for live content. The television must have a DRM system, if it does not, these channels will not be available. Whoever has TV with DRM should not have a hard time, “he says.

Even the most up-to-date SmartTVs from Sony, Panasonic, and TLC can have trouble running the platform fully. Brêtas also says that in these cases it is better for the user “not to have Globoplay, than to have a frustrating experience”.

According to Raymundo Barros, Globo’s CTO, offering quality live channels combined with on-demand service is a challenge. Still, it guarantees that the platform will deliver “a very good experience” on televisions that meet DRM and processing requirements. In all, there are 10 TV brands, with 20 operating systems running Globoplay on more than 1800 models.

“We develop codes that run Globoplay in each one, respecting the limitations of each model, and for televisions produced after 2015, we will have a considerable improvement in the experience of the consumer who watches the content of the platform directly on television,” he says.

Raymundo Barros also says that the models capable of offering a complete user experience can be consulted on the website. “The place where we are going to have a question and where we guarantee the experience of being able to change channels in the same way that we change in traditional open or pay TV is well highlighted,” he guarantees.

In addition, the user who wants to access Globoplay + live channels through TV needs to have an Internet speed greater than 40 Megabytes per second and a well-made configuration. “Linear channels are more sensitive to latency variations,” says Brêtas.

Globo x Netflix: the dispute over native applications

Although it is the largest streaming platform in Brazil, with more than 840 titles published in 2019 and close to 115 million hours of consumption per month, it is still difficult to compete with giants like Netflix when it comes to connected television. Barros says the main reason lies in the fact that Netflix has a global agreement with manufacturers to have the native application inside televisions.

But Globo is eating around the edges and establishing regional associations. The result is the partnership with Samsung for televisions of the 2020 line. “The game is not balanced if there is no presence in the hardware [apps nativos]. We only did it by the name of Globo “

“With the expansion of these televisions with native Globoplay, the consumer experience will increase substantially,” adds Barros, Globo’s chief technology officer.

It also claims that Globo has doubled its CDN (Content Distribution Network), which is ultimately a network of servers that geographically brings users closer to the content they want to access, reducing data transfer time.

“We doubled our CDN, which today has a distribution capacity of five terabytes. Today we serve more than a billion hours of video consumption, four times what we had achieved last year, ”says Barros.
