Globo returns to show Senna’s title at the 1988 Japanese GP on the first Sunday in May | Big prize

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, broadcasters broadcast historical events, games, and races of the past, and on Globo, it has been no different. This Wednesday (22), the station confirmed that, on the first Sunday of May (3), it will completely surpass the 1988 Japanese F1 GP.

Globo has been using the banner on Sunday afternoon to retrieve notable games, such as the 2002 World Cup Final and the 2005 Confederations Cup Final, which begins at 10 a.m. (in Brasilia).

The 1988 Japanese GP is one of the most remembered in F1 history. The Suzuka race was won by Ayrton Senna and marked the first of the Brazilian’s three titles, in a memorable performance after falling to 14th place at the start.

The 1988 Japanese Grand Prix

Senna came to Suzuka with the situation under control to be champion. It is true that the weekend started with Prost leading the World Drivers Championship, but the point elimination system was in favor of the Brazilian. A simple victory in either of the last two races was enough to confirm the achievement.

In the private fight between the two drivers in Japan, Senna started with a pole advantage, 0s324 faster than Prost. If the race ended with the drivers in exactly those positions, the championship would end. But it wouldn’t be that simple: Ayrton struggled early and fell to 14th place in Suzuka’s turn 1 corner. It was a world-size burden, but also an opportunity to make a heroic display.

So it was. Senna gained six positions only on the first lap, starting the second in the eighth. Prost needed to seize the opportunity to open an advantage because it was clear that the Brazilian would eventually reach the top positions. Lap after lap, the riders lagged behind: Riccardo Patrese, Alessandro Nannini, Thierry Boutsen, Michele Alboreto, Gerhard Berger …

When Ivan Capelli retired from second place, after briefly taking Prost’s lead, the fight really started. It was still lap 20 of 51 and the two McLarens were in first and second. The Frenchman was still leading, but in unfavorable conditions: the exchange was not working perfectly and the track was wet in some sections.

Just wait a moment of weakness for Alain, who came with stragglers. The Frenchman wasted time trying to beat Andrea de Cesaris and allowed Senna to enter the main straight. Overtaking done and leadership changed on lap 28. Subsequently, race managed and title guaranteed.
