The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Gilmar Mendes, took to social networks on Christmas Day to defend the urgency of vaccination against covid-19 throughout Brazil. He also criticized the ideological arena that formed around the issue.
“Vaccines have no ideology. Their scientific function is to save lives, as they have been doing for so many years. Almost 190 thousand have already left for # COVID19,” the STF minister wrote on his Twitter profile on Friday 25.
“Immunization is urgent and must cover the entire country. We must depend on the priority criteria established by the health authorities,” he added.
Gilmar Mendes’ position reinforces the pressure against the government over the vaccine issue.
This Thursday 24, President Jair Bolsonaro again expressed his opinion on the issue by raising doubts about the effectiveness of the immunization sponsored by the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB). “The effectiveness of that vaccine in São Paulo seems to be down there, right?” He said, in a live broadcast on social networks.
Although several countries have already started vaccination, Brazil still does not have an official date to start the immunization campaign for Brazilians against covid-19. It lagged behind even in Latin America, with countries like Mexico, Costa Rica and Chile already applying the first doses this Thursday.
