General Eduardo Pazuello takes office tomorrow as Minister of Health in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (without a party). The ceremony was confirmed in the official agenda of the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, and is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Pazuello temporarily took over the folder on May 16, amid the new coronavirus pandemic in Brazil. He replaced Nelson Teich, who was in office for a month, having previously replaced Luiz Henrique Mandetta.
Both Teich and Mandetta left office due to disagreements with Bolsonaro on policies to combat the new coronavirus. Issues such as social detachment and the use of chloroquine to treat COVID-19 have placed the president and his ministers on opposite sides.
In these four months, Pazuello defended the early treatment of covid-19 and the autonomy of states and municipalities in the adoption of social isolation policies.
He also positioned himself in alignment with President Bolsonaro in defending the use of chloroquine, a drug that does not have scientifically proven effectiveness in the treatment of COVID-19.
With him at the head of the portfolio, the Ministry of Health established a new guideline with guidelines for the early use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19, even for mild cases.
At the same time, the minister stressed that he sees nothing wrong in questioning the use of the drug for this purpose.
Army General Pazuello is a logistics specialist.
The Army was the logistical coordinator for the Army troops during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, in addition to coordinating the operations of Operation Welcome, which assists Venezuelan immigrants who arrive in Roraima fleeing the political and economic crisis in the neighboring country.
