The Copa Libertadores has a new home on Brazilian broadcast television: SBT. Silvio Santos’ announcer closed an agreement with Conmebol, took the traditional place of Rede Globo and will broadcast the main South American competition until 2022.

SBT will have the right to broadcast two games per round, always on Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. (Brasilia time). The station will inherit the matches Globo had previously chosen before breaking its contract with Conmebol.

Thus, the debut matches of the Libertadores in SBT will be those of Palmeiras and Grêmio next Wednesday. The team of coach Vanderlei Luxemburg visits Bolívar, in La Paz, for the third day of Group B. Renato Gaúcho’s team faces Universidad Católica, also as a visitor, in Chile, for Group E.

The continental tournament will resume next Tuesday after a long period of unemployment due to the new coronavirus pandemic. The last matches had been played on March 12.

Last week, Gazeta do Povo had already confirmed the news that Conmebol and SBT were negotiating the broadcasting rights of the tournament. At that time, there were some bureaucratic procedures for signing the agreement, which happened this week.

With the free games package on the market, Conmebol looked for other stations interested in broadcasting the tournament. The most successful negotiation was with SBT, which has a significant scope in the national territory and has already proven to be successful in the football broadcasts this year with the exhibition of the final of the Carioca Championship.

Since the reduction in the value of the contract was not accepted by Conmebol, SBT must pay the same amount that Globo would have previously paid. In other words, around US $ 60 million (R $ 316 million at the current price) must pay Silvio Santos’ station per year to the entity for the exhibition of the games.
