Juan Pablo Ramírez, 23, has never been involved in great controversy. He is described as a “silent” athlete on the field, so the accusation of racial insult surprised Jhon Jaime Osório, a journalist from Rádio Caracol, “very”.

– [Se surpreendeu?] Very. He is a very calm player on the field. A great talent, but intermittent in his game. He never had discipline problems. The criticisms have always been for the intermittence in their games – he says.

From a very young age, Ramírez is seen as a great promise of Colombian football, a player with great skill with the ball at his feet, a dribbler and with passes in the national teams of his country. The goal scored against Flamengo, in the face of confusion, is a sample of that talent.

Revealed by the Lions, he arrived at Atlético Nacional early, even being part of the Libertadores champion team in 2016. Over time, he came to be seen as “a player capable of returning Nacional to continental glory”. These are the words of the sports journalist Susana Panesso.

Except that “Índio” Ramírez never consolidated. With irregular performances, he lost the favor of the Nacional fans and was irritated by being called “cold chest” (an expression widely used in Spanish that means something like “without race”). This is what Panesso says:

– they presented it [no Atlético Nacional] like a star, a 10, a midfielder. A player capable of returning Nacional to continental glory. It was a flop, fans called it cold chest. He was very angry.

The independent journalist Juan Molina recalled a game in which he burst into tears when he was replaced by then-coach Paulo Autuori. Panesso also quotes the episode:

– He left crying from a game, I don’t remember when he left. But I think the fans don’t really like it. It is a promise that has not been kept – says the journalist.

With no space in the squad in 2020, outside of the coach’s plans, he was loaned to Atlético Bucaramanga, where he only managed to make one game. With the arrival of the pandemic, he terminated his contract and only returned to play again in December, in that loss of Bahia to Defense and Justice.

Ramírez played four games with Bahia. He also stood out in the defeat suffered by Palmeiras. It was enough for Mano Menezes to say that he had finally found the midfielder he was looking for, a player to add depth to the team. The coach, however, left the club last Sunday. Instead, take Dado Cavalcanti, former coach of the Transition Team.

Now, it remains to follow the progress of the case and the conclusion of the investigation that Bahia is carrying out. This Tuesday, the complaint took new forms, and Ramírez remains at the center of the controversy. Flamengo received a lip-reading report attesting that the tricolor player would also have offended striker Bruno Henrique. The Bahian club continues to investigate the case and should issue an official position on the episode in the coming days.
