From the smell of revenge: Fla and Atlético star in a new duel and preview of the Copa do Brasil | Brasileirão Serie A

Flamengo and Atlético are not historical rivals, far from it, but they have played hot games in recent years. And this showdown will win new chapters in the coming weeks. Fla and Furacão hurt at 4 pm this Sunday, in Maracanã, as a preview of the Brazil Cup.

Globo broadcasts Fla x Athletico (except SP), and ge tracks everything in real time.

The round of 16 matches will be held in the weeks of October 28 (in Curitiba) and November 4 (in Rio de Janeiro). That is, there will be three games in the interval of one month. Details have yet to be defined.

This “rivalry” between Flamengo and Atlético began in the 2017 Libertadores, when they were in the same group, together with Univesidad Catóilca and San Lorenzo. Each team won a game (both 2-1), but Hurricane made it to the round of 16 and Fla fell to the group stage.

But the weather has really warmed up since 2019. Atlético eliminated the Rio de Janeiro team on penalties, in the middle of the Maracana, and took another step towards the Brazilian Cup title. In the celebration, the Huracán players -among them, Léo Pereira- provoked with the “smell”.

Flamengo gave the change in double doses. First, for the Brasileirão. Then for the Super Cup. Jorge Jesús’ team won 2-0 at Baixada during the Brazilian title campaign. The Rio club players returned the “smell” after the game.

Later, Mengo also beat Atlético in the Super Cup, a unique game competition that marks the duel between the Copa do Brasil champions and Brasileirão. Fla won 3-0, with goals from the Arrascaeta trio, Bruno Henrique and Gabigol, and opened 2020 with (more) a title.

In this scenario, there are 11 games for 2017 here, with five wins for Flamengo and three wins for Atlético, plus three draws. The Huracán beat the 2017 Libertadores and the 2019 Brazil Cup, but Fla made the change in the 2019 Brasileirão and the 2020 Super Cup.

This Sunday’s game is not as decisive as the previous ones, but the victory is still very important. Flamengo tries to touch the Atlético-MG leader, and Atlético wants to open an advantage for the relegation zone and, at the same time, stick in the G-6.

Fla is sixth, with 18 points, and Athletico is eleventh, with 14. And then, who improves this time?

In addition to the stage, the coaches are also different from the last match between them. Domènec Torrent replaced Jorge Jesus in Fla, and Eduardo Barros inherited Dorival Junior’s place in Furacão. The technicians will even change the lineups.

Recovered from Covid-19, Dome once again has names like Rodrigo Caio, Léo Pereira, Willian Arão, and Everton Ribeiro. However, Gabigol, injured, goes outside. Eduardo Barros will not have sanctioned Thiago Heleno, and other players can be saved.
