Fluminense beat Athletico-PR 3 to 1, today (5), in Maracanã, for the 24th round of the Brazilian Championship. The result, obtained with two goals from Marcos Paulo and one from Nenê, returned the tricolor to the direct qualification zone of the Libertadores. Léo Cittadini opened the scoring for the visitors.

With the win, Fluminense reached 39 points and beat Palmeiras and Santos. The paulista duo drew the direct confrontation, also today, and stopped at 38 points. The tricolor team can still be beaten in this round, but only if Grêmio beats Vasco or Internacional beats Atlético-MG, both matches are tomorrow (6).

In the next round, Fluminense has the classic against Vasco, in São Januário, on Sunday (13). Athletico-PR will try to recover against Atlético-MG, at Arena da Baixada, on Saturday (12). As both teams are only in the dispute for Brasileirão, they will have a week off until the next performance.

The best

Marcos Paulo was the great name of Fluminense. His was the assist for the first goal, scored by Nenê. And when the tricolor team pressed in the second half, they scored two goals in an interval of three minutes, decreeing the victory in Maracana.

Worst

It was not Thiago Heleno’s day. At 11 minutes he committed a penalty by touching the ball with his hand. And even being stopped by goalkeeper Santos, he failed again 20 minutes later. By preventing a Fluminense counterattack, he harshly overthrew Michel Araújo, received the second yellow card and was sent off.

Recovered from Covid-19

The duel in Maracanã brought together two teams that had their squads destroyed by the Covid-19 outbreak. Fluminense had the return of midfielder Hudson, full-back Egídio and midfielder Michel Araújo to the starting eleven. Atlético had the return of goalkeeper Santos, winger Abner and attacking midfielder Nikão.

End of impulse

Athletico-PR came out of the relegation zone thanks to four consecutive victories (Fortaleza, Goiás, Atlético-MG and Santos). But with the two consecutive defeats (Palmeiras and, today, Gripe), taking six goals, Paulo Autuori’s team lost momentum. He parked at 29 points, but is still five points ahead of the bottom four group. In the same period, they fell from the Copa Libertadores de América in a playoff against River Plate.

Rise of the Tricolor

On the other hand, Fluminense re-entered in a high moment. The team has not lost in three games and has scored seven points in that sequence. Before beating Atlético, he beat Internacional, in Beira-Rio, upset and drew with RB Bragantino in Maracaná.

Game timeline

Fluminense created the first opportunity of the match, at 3 minutes, with Marcos Paulo, but Santos did a miracle, sending the ball to a corner.

After that, Athletico-PR almost reached the goal with Richard and opened the scoring with Léo Cittadini. In the 9th minute, after a good move by Abner on the left, the midfielder hit the entrance of the area, first, in the right corner.

Fluminense had the opportunity to draw shortly after. Thiago Heleno touched the ball with his hand inside the area and the referee scored a penalty. In the collection, Santos defended Nenê’s shot.

At 25 minutes, however, Nenê recovered. After a good play by Michel Araújo, Santos spread it and the ball was left for Marcos Paulo, who helped the veteran midfielder to shoot over the goal line.

Before the break, a decisive move came. While trying to make a counterattack, Michel Araújo was knocked down by Thiago Heleno. The Athletico-PR legacy received a second yellow card and was sent off.

In the final stage, Fluminense did not breathe for Atlético-PR, but it took a while to get the comeback. The second goal came just after 28 minutes, with Marcos Paulo, in a shot. The tricolor striker scored again in the sequence, decreeing the victory in Maracana.
