In search of the leader São Paulo, Flamengo did his homework and pitched Santos 4-1 this afternoon in Maracanã, for the 25th round of the Brazilian Championship. With goals from Gerson, Gabigol (two from penalties) and Filipe Luís (Bruninho discounted), Fla shortened the distance to five points, but will have to dry out Tricolor, who still face Corinthians (13) today. The red and black team, however, still has one game less.
In front of a team full of home-trained boys, Fla dictated the rhythm of the match in Maracana and was the master of possession and actions. Based on speed and counterattacks, the Santos players had their moments and annoyed the rojinegros, but were eliminated from the first goal conceded.
Rogério Ceni’s team will have one more free week to train until they face Bahia, at 6.15 pm, in Maracanã on Sunday (20). Alvinegro has a decisive duel on Wednesday (16), when he decides against Grêmio a place in the semifinals of the Libertadores, at 7.15pm, in Vila Belmiro.
Bruno Henrique makes the defense miserable
Forward Bruno Henrique relived his best moments with the Flamengo shirt at the helm of the former club. With intense movement, shirt 27 was decisive to dismantle the rival defensive sector and had direct participation in two red and black goals, always with his attacks on the left side. Bruno handed out good passes to his teammates and, almost on his head, he almost left his mark.
Goalkeeper João Paulo does not return well
The Santos goalkeeper returned to the starting lineup after seven games, but his performance helped justify the choice of Cuca. João Paulo missed the goal after a corner that generated the first goal in Rio. Then, he cut a bad cross from Bruno Henrique that ended with another ball in the net, this time with Filipe Luís. On the play that resulted in Fla’s fourth goal, he came out in a confused fashion and committed a penalty at Everton Ribeiro.
Flamengo sets the pace and settles
With more game volume, Flamengo managed to dictate the temperature of the match and tried to take advantage of the spaces left by the rival, who chose to wait for the home team on their playing field. With good movement of his men in front, Fla created spaces, but had difficulties to finish in the goal of João Paulo. At the base of the muffle, Gerson managed to take advantage of a ball from Nathan’s head to open the account. With the partial victory, Fla attempted to liquidate the game in the final stage and easily built up her victory, transforming a game that was difficult into an easy one.
Santos: individual failures undermine scheme
The coach chose a completely reserve team to face Flamengo and set up a strong defensive scheme to go out on the counterattacks. The strategy had been working defensively, but Marcos Leonardo, very isolated, could not threaten Diego Alves’ goal. However, back from set pieces, Peixe suffered the first goal after João Paulo went wrong. Then defender Alex took a penalty in Arrascaeta and ended up ruining Santos’ strategy for the match.
Nathan is doing well and the defense goes up
Chosen by Ceni to replace the suspended Gustavo Henrique, defender Natan played a solid game and excelled against Santos. Right at the exit of the ball, the youngster appeared well on the play that originated from Gerson’s goal. Before jersey 8 headed for the goal, the defender had headed in João Paulo’s crossbar.
Chronology
After Natan headed the crossbar, Gerson, also with a header, opened the scoring in the 41st minute of the opening stage. In the second half, Alex took Arrascaeta’s shirt off and the judge scored a penalty. In the collection, Gabigol expanded. At 12, Filipe Luís took advantage of the goalkeeper’s rebound and expanded. At 25, Gabigol took another penalty and spread. At 29, Bruninho headed in with no chances for Diego Alves.
Low last minute
Summoned to play in Maracanã, midfielder Vinícius Balieiro was diagnosed with covid-19 and it became a last minute minimum for Santos. The player’s box was informed by the club an hour before the ball rolled.
Top scorer “becomes” Gabi
Forward Gabigol has adopted a new “name” as of now. Either on his jersey or in the material sent by Fla, the player now identifies himself as “Gabi”. In the club, the nickname is already common among other teammates.
Bruno Henrique honored
Before the ball rolled, forward Bruno Henrique received a jersey commemorating the 100 matches completed by the club. The player completed the mark in the elimination of Racing (ARG).
