Three years ago a serious fire in the Campo Grande shop did not cause mobilization or damage. The last one took place in 2017, in a rubber factory in the Center of the Capital. But the images of this Sunday (13) are not even close. Even without being able to enter, from the outside it is possible to see the total destruction inside Atacadão on Avenida Duque de Caxias.

The twisted iron and metal structure on display was what remained of a room dominated by flames for almost 6 hours. In the front, you can still see the carts abandoned by customers with some products.

Work focused on the rear of the building, where the roof gave way.

Part of the metal roof of the rear area, where the product is unloaded, gave way and is crooked.

In addition to 11 vehicles and 50 firefighters, Infraero and the Army helped the working group to put out the fire and prevent the adjoining houses from being hit.

After 6 hours of intense work, the fire was brought under control, but crews continue to work on site to cool down the area and prevent the fire from starting again.

The cause of the fire still depends on experience, but customers inside the store recorded the time the fire started.

Inside Atacadão, huge flares appeared around 5 in the afternoon. Minutes later, the black smoke was already visible from miles away. According to witnesses, the flames started at the top of the shelves in the cleaning sector.

The building, which was full at the time, was vacated, officials tried to put out the fire, but the structure was questioned by customers who complained that only a small hose was used.

In one of the recordings you can see that the water begins to gush out but soon the pressure seems to weaken in the face of a fire that is still intense. See:

Soon the fire dominated the building that has been in operation for 8 years. Inaugurated in 2012, the Atacadão unit, on Avenida Duque de Caxias, had an investment of R $ 34 million at that time. The store directly employs 287 employees. Despite the shock, neither workers nor customers were injured.

The stock contained many boxes and wood, where the products were kept, which made the situation even worse, giving more material for the flames to gain strength. The biggest concern was the diesel tank at the rear, used to supply the Atacadão generator.

For this reason, the avenue was blocked, as were the blocks at the rear of the building. The neighborhood is residential, and residents were instructed to leave the house and remove gas cylinders to avoid explosions in the heat.

Firefighters also use a product called foam generating liquid, which is used in the event of air accidents, which lowers the temperature and consequently the flames.

Those who passed by Duque de Caxias Avenue in the late afternoon were shocked by the scenes and registered their fear of the flames.

4th fire in 8 years – Until the fire this Sunday, the Planeta Real store fire was considered the most serious in recent history in Campo Grande. In May 2013, 80 men from the Fire Department worked to contain the flames at the store on Avenida Afonso Pena.

The Center was stopped that day and some 70,000 liters of water were used. All the merchandise exposed in more than 2 thousand m² burned. Even the area reserved for fish, which was an attraction on the site, burned down.

Earlier, in December 2012, another large fire destroyed the Paulistão Wholesale store, located on Avenida Costa e Silva, Vila Progresso. In 2007, another unit of the same network caught fire in Rui Barbosa.

The most recent fire occurred in June 2017, at Casa das Borrachas, in Fernando Corrêa da Costa. A problem in the electrical system caused the fire. That day the work was less complicated, it lasted approximately 1 hour, with 28 thousand liters of water consumed.

Another difference this Sunday was the use of the Magirus ladder, 60 meters high. After years of shutdown, since March it was at the disposal of the firefighters and unfortunately made its debut in the fight against fire in Atacadão.
