Supporters of Palmeiras and Santos, finalists of the Libertadores, gathered in the lower west sector of Maracaná, this Saturday, to witness the final of the tournament (the other sectors were closed). All those present, about 2,500, were invited by the clubs with the approval of Conmebol.
The agglomeration ignores the protocol of the World Health Organization (WHO) against Covid-19. There are some fans without masks also in the stadium. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been more than 220,000 deaths in Brazil so far due to the disease.
During the game, the Maracanã sound system warned guests to “wear a mask” and to “maintain social distance.” Some security guards encourage people to sit in non-contiguous chairs. After that, some fans spread more.
According to Conmebol, banners were placed on the chairs to separate the fans, which was not respected. The organization also explained that guests had to submit a negative PCR test carried out up to 96 hours before departure.
