A Capitol police officer died Thursday after being wounded during the invasion of the United States Congress the day before, according to Rep. Dean Phillips. The name of the police officer, the fifth person to die after Wednesday’s clashes, was not released.
According to Capitol Police Chief Steven A. Sund, Capitol Police officers were attacked “with metal tubes and other weapons” by people who “were determined to cause great harm” during the invasion. Sund also said that more than 50 members of the corporation were injured and several were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Much criticized for the response of the Capitol Police during the invasion, Sund announced, through a spokeswoman, that he is resigning from his post and that he will leave office on January 16. His departure had been requested by the mayor, Nancy Pelosi.

As of Wednesday, four Trump supporters who participated in the invasion had already died. The only one publicly identified was military veteran Ashli Babbit, shot by a police officer inside the Chamber floor. The agent who hit her was removed. The other three victims died in a hospital.
