BRASÍLIA – The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Edson Fachin determined that the Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, should speak urgently about the conclusion of an investigation against the Mayor, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), who checks transfers of cash from Odebrecht two. Fachin served an order Tuesday directing that an “immediate” letter be sent to Aras requesting a statement on the matter.

The Federal Police concluded this investigation in August 2019 and charged Maia and her father, Councilor César Maia, with the crimes of passive corruption, electoral distortion and money laundering. At that time, Fachin gave the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) 15 days to decide whether to file a complaint or close the case, but to date there has been no position. The then Attorney General of the Republic Raquel Dodge left office without ending the case, but Aras did not define either.

GLOBO revealed on the 31st that Aras unarchived and reopened another investigation against Maia, regarding OAS payments, after authorization from Fachin. In this case, the PGR requested that the investigation be further investigated by the PF.
But the Odebrecht investigation remains stagnant. In May, Fachin had already indicted Aras for the matter, but the PGR responded that a definition would depend on the OAS request to unarchive the payment investigation. Fachin, however, pointed out that these were two different investigations, with different objects and at different periods. For this reason, the STF minister again demanded a position from the PGR.

“Considering the expiration of the stipulated terms, either in the investigation or in the subsequent separate petition related to it, it is urgent to obtain a statement from the Federal Public Ministry. Therefore, immediately inform the Attorney General of the Republic, ”Fachin dispatched.
After the investigation was reopened earlier this month, Maia said she expected the investigation to be closed in a short period of time.
– I am sure that this investigation, which was opened almost a year and a half later, will be closed again within the minimum period necessary for its re-evaluation.
