Former Bolivian President Evo Morales left Argentina this Friday for Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, on a plane from the government of Nicolás Maduro. Morales has been in Buenos Aires since December last year, as a political refugee, where he will return this Sunday.

Leader of the Movement for Socialism (MAS), which last week elected Luis Arce as its new president, Morales says he intends to return to Bolivia, but has not advanced the date. “My return to Bolivia is not yet scheduled,” said Morales, who may be accompanied by Argentine President Alberto Fernández.

Evo Morales resigned from the presidency on November 10, 2019, after losing the support of the Armed Forces in a coup in the extreme right of the country, amid allegations of fraud in the elections of that year. Subsequently, this accusation was not proven. Evo left the country, traveled to Mexico, and shortly thereafter applied for political asylum in Argentina on December 10.
