A 22-year-old makeup artist from Vila Velha, in Gran Vitória, sought out the Federal Police after receiving seeds from a Chinese website instead of the products she had bought. The packages were delivered this Wednesday (30) at the Superintendency of the Ministry of Agriculture in Vitória.

Receipts for these unsolicited seed packages are investigated by the Ministry of Agriculture. As of Tuesday (29), 36 similar cases had been registered in eight other states of Brazil. This was the first case recorded in Espírito Santo and will be referred for analysis in a federal laboratory.

Makeup artist Saky Martins reported that she received a message from the post office to pick up the order at one of the branches in Greater Victoria on Tuesday. The young woman said that she has a habit of shopping on international websites and has always received the products ordered.

This time, however, instead of earrings, a cell phone projector, and a miniature ornament, Saky received two packets of seeds and a thermometer.

“I received a message from the Post Office so that I could receive an item that the postman tried to deliver to my house and could not. I went to an agency and when I received the package, I thought it was not my request because of the format, “he said.

As soon as he received the order, Saky called the Federal Police and received instructions to deliver the package with the seeds to the Superintendency of the Ministry of Agriculture in Vitória.

According to the ministry, the origin of the packaging is from Asian countries, such as China and Malaysia. The Chinese deny shipping and say the mailing labels are fake.

The Ministry of Agriculture said that the population should not open packages received by mail for unsolicited seed packages, regardless of the country of origin.

“This material cannot be opened under any circumstances, because if it has been contaminated with chemicals, pests, fungi and bacteria, they may have contact with the environment and we will not know how to quantify the damage of this illegal receipt,” warned the superintendent of the Ministry of Agriculture in Espírito Santo, Aureliano Costa.

The Ministry of Agriculture has already asked all state superintendencies to report daily on the receipt of suspicious seed packages.

If the citizen receives seeds from abroad at home, the government directs the delivery of the material to one of the ministry units in his state or to the state agricultural defense agency.

The package should also not be disposed of in the trash. The measure is to avoid contact of the seeds with the soil, which could cause damage to the environment and agricultural areas.

Similar problems in the US and Canada

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has opened an investigation to determine the arrival of several packages of mysterious seeds, mostly from China.

The USDA said it has identified more than a dozen species of plants. What puzzles the authorities is that the product reached thousands of Americans without being bought or ordered.

“USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (Aphis) is working closely with the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, other federal agencies, and state departments of agriculture to investigate the situation,” the department said. .

The packages were also seen in Canada, where the government issued an alert against “foreign seeds sent by mail from China or Taiwan.”
