Emmy 2020: ‘Schitt’s Creek’, ‘Watchmen’ and ‘Succession’ are the big winners of the ‘virtual’ awards | Pop Art

In 2020, the most important awards on American television celebrated the first “virtual” edition of their history due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and most of the guests received the awards remotely.

Film crews followed 138 stars from 114 different locations in 10 countries. While some winners received their statuettes by couriers in anti-pollution suits, others won boxes that were only opened when the award was confirmed.

Although most of the awards were held in isolation, the evening’s host, Jimmy Kimmel, and some guests such as actress Jennifer Aniston were present live at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The domain of ‘Schitt’s Creek’

The awards started apotically for the comedy “Schitt’s Creek,” which ended the night undefeated.

There were seven wins in the first seven categories: Comedy Series, Best Comedy Actor, Eugene Levy, Best Comedy Actress, Catherine O’Hara, Supporting Characters Lev Levy and Annie Murphy, Screenplay and Direction.

Dan Levy, son of protagonist Eugene and winner also as director and screenwriter, even joked that the audience was going to start hating the team after so many victories.

As a result, the series about a family of failed moguls seeking promotion in a small rural town bought as a joke years ago ends with a huge celebration. Season six was the last.

In addition to the seven awards at the ceremony, the production won in one category, the best casting director in a comedy series.

‘Watchmen’ 4 x 4 ‘Succession’

Among the dramatic and miniseries categories, “Succession” and “Watchmen” confirmed favoritism with four statuettes each.

The classic comic adaptation was Best Miniseries, Best Actress with Regina King, Best Supporting Actor with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Best Screenplay. Holder of the record for nominations for the year, with 26 in all, “Watchmen” won another six before the ceremony.

The production about the internal disputes of a family that owns a media conglomerate won for best drama series, best actor with Jeremy Strong and best script and direction. The most nominated among the dramas with “Ozark”, in 18 categories, removed three others from the event.

The dominance of the three series did not mean a night without surprises. Zendaya beat out favorites like Olivia Colman (“The Crown”) and Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”) in the category of best drama actress with her work in “Euphoria.”

Among the directors of the miniseries, Maria Schrader faced three companions of “Watchmen” to win the Emmy for “Unorthodox”, in one of the few zebras of this edition.

RuPaul was also surprised to receive the Emmy for Best Reality Show Competition with “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” With the measures of social isolation, some prizes were delivered by messengers in hand.

The presenter won his in a box that was only opened in case of victory with a shower of confetti, but the Academy forgot to warn him.

With the nominees out of the awards, most of the entries were made via live video calls. At first Jimmy Kimmel showed hundreds of stars on a big screen.
