The Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, confirmed that, from the government’s point of view, emergency help no will extend to the year 2021. According to him, the new pandemic coronavirus it is yielding in the country and economic activity is returning.
The minister’s statement came during a videoconference promoted by investment platforms Empiricus and Vitreo. According to Guedes, the benefit paid to the informal could have a duration of up to one year if the value of the fees were less, R $ 200, as initially proposed by the economic team.
Guedes, after acknowledging that the emergency aid worth R $ 600 and the extension with quotas of R $ 300 until December had the support of the government, revealed that the new program ended up demanding a lot of resources from the Union.
“The reality is that the disease has subsided and the economy has returned with great force. So, from the government’s point of view, there is no extension of emergency aid, ”he said.
The minister confirmed that at the moment there is political pressure for the benefit to be extended for a longer time. But Guedes confirmed that the actions of the Federal Government will be based on evidence and that the portfolio will know how to react to a possible emergency situation, which is not in the plans at the moment.
Political pressure
With the lack of definition of the new social program, the political wing of the government once again defended extension of emergency aid for another three months next year.
According to advisers, President Jair Bolsonaro has so far not made any decision on the matter and must pronounce himself after the end of the second round of municipal elections.
“The decision is made by President Bolsonaro and, so far, he has not taken a position. You must decide between this and next week, knowing the importance of the benefit for the population that is in a vulnerable situation, “said a presidential adviser.
The assistant to the president said that requests for extension of the benefit had increased. However, he stressed that compliance with the public spending ceiling must be guaranteed. According to the current text, the payment of emergency aid will last until December 2020.
Government leaders want to approve the so-called Emergency PEC in 2020 and include the government’s new social program in the text. However, the president’s own allied base in the Legislature considers it impossible.
For this reason, with the vote on the proposal extended to 2021, the government’s political wing again advocated that emergency aid continue to be paid until Congress approves measures that guarantee a new social program or the reformulation of Bolsa Família.
