Caixa Econômica Federal said it had paid emergency aid to 67.7 million Brazilians. Of the 48 million who were not part of Bolsa Família, 33 million did not have a bank account before the pandemic, said the president of Caixa, Pedro Guimarães.
Therefore, to ensure receipt of the benefit amounts, the bank had to create accounts in the digital model.
“Agent managed to generate 33 million new clients, from the point of view of social and digital insertion. They are free accounts, through which it is possible to make transfers, bill payments, bill payments. And they will remain valid after the pandemic, being able to be withdrawn at ATMs. That is, the citizen can basically do everything. Only if there is a lot of consumption will you start paying normal rates, since this account was created with the hypothesis that the public is more humble people ”, declared the bank’s president.

Still, according to Guimarães, the acceleration of banking services was only possible thanks to the flexibility in data collection, approved by the Central Bank during the pandemic. These changes also allow launching a microcredit program at the bank in 2021.
“Microcredit was a project we were working on even before the pandemic. But the discussion we had internally was that it would not be economically possible and profitable to carry out loan operations of R $ 100 or R $ 200 using our branch base, or the lottery. The only way was through an application, which we end up developing now. So, the question of the solution through digital accounts accelerated the main project that we had in Caixa in years ”, said Guimarães.
The president said the new program is expected to hit the public in February or March next year.
“These people, before, when they needed money, they took it in loan sharks or financial institutions, with interest of up to 20% per month. After the pandemic, we will launch a large microcredit program, using this digital account, and we will place it for a small fraction of what was charged to these people. It will be something very different, “he concluded.
