‘Elite player’, club fall and peak with Sampaoli: journalists analyze Vargas, Atlético’s reinforcement

Champion in Chile, Italy and Mexico, highlighted in the titles of the Chilean Seleo in the Copa América and with a well-known goal of light, Eduardo Vargas returns to Brazil after seven years. After a period of ups and downs at Grmio, the 30-year-old forward played for four clubs and now has the opportunity to shine again alongside Jorge Sampaoli, coach who made him reach the best moments of his career. “Edu Vargas, in Mexico, has always been seen as a player of elite, a ‘premium’ player. He added a lot of equipment, he was champion, the fans like him a lot and recognize his quality as a player. It has a lot of quality. A part of the public thinks that Vargas was not given many opportunities in Tigres, ”says Mexican journalist Vladimir García, who covers the forward’s former club daily.

For the reporter, Vargas was a reserve for a certain period, not because of anything, but because of the strong cast assembled by Tigers. “One of the most powerful teams in Mexican soccer, they are among those with the most money and have many stars in the squad. So it was difficult for Vargas to be an undisputed starter. Staying on the bench was, of course, something Vargas did not like, especially when he was a ‘five-star’ player. But tigers like that. Throughout his career, Vargas went through Cobreloa, Universidad de Chile, Napoli, Grmio, Valencia, Queens Park Rangers, Hoffenheim and, finally, Tigres. Most of the time he was a constant presence in the Chilean Seleo. In the 13 years since its professionalization, it has experienced several moments of irregularity, but it reached its peak precisely under the command of Sampaoli, whom he met in Cidade do Galo.

“The two best moments of his career were with Sampaoli in the bank. At La U, he was South American champion in 2011 and the league’s top scorer. I ‘flew’ on the field in this team, which was very ‘oiled’. The other good moment was in the team, also with Sampaoli, in 2015.
