The security camera of an elevator shows the driver Jose Maria da Costa Junior, suspected of driving the car that hit and killed the cyclist Marina Kohler Harkot, 28, smiling and talking to a girl moments after the accident in the West Zone of the city. In the video obtained by the researchers you can see the calm and smiling face of Costa Júnior. He talks to a girl and even carries her bag over her shoulder, talking on her cell phone. In the images, he does not show nervousness and discouragement from having gone through the accident that caused the cyclist’s death, according to investigators in the case.
Police say the hit occurred around midnight on Sunday (8) or a few minutes earlier. The Detecta system did not work on the radar, which is located 30 meters from the place of the accident, on Avenida Paulo VI. The license plate was only registered by another radar that is at the end of Sumaré Avenue, more than two kilometers from the hit point. This happened, according to investigators, around midnight.
From Sumaré Avenue to the building where the driver lives, at dawn, the child would take a few minutes to park the vehicle. Therefore, the video of the elevator, with a clock at 00:17, is compatible with the time of the accident, according to the police.

Costa Júnior is 34 years old and appeared this Tuesday afternoon (10) in the 14th Pinheiros Police District, in the West Zone of São Paulo, together with the defense lawyer. During the entire testimony, he was silent because, according to the defense, “he was very nervous.”
The defense reported that Costa Júnior escaped after being beaten “because he was terrified.” The hit man told the deputy that he had not drunk the night of the accident.

The delegate in the case requested the preventive detention of José Maria da Costa Júnior, but has not yet been heard by the judge. For the accused to be arrested, the decision must be made before midnight on Tuesday (10), because on Wednesday (11) the electoral law that prevents arrests that are not in the act five days before the election, which happens this Sunday (15).
If Justice decrees the arrest of the driver who hit the cyclist, he can only be detained until midnight this Tuesday (10), precisely because of the electoral law.

According to the investigation, José Maria da Costa Júnior is the driver of the Hyundai Tucson that ran over Marina, the cyclist who was pedaling on Avenida Paulo VI, in the Sumaré region, in São Paulo. A motorcyclist, who was at the scene and saw the accident, followed the vehicle and noted the license plate.
