After more than five hours from the start of the vote count, the result of the US presidential election remains undefined. The scenario points to a bitter dispute between Democratic candidate Joe Biden and Republican Donald Trump, to be defined by Midwestern states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, precisely those in which there is a large volume of votes by mail to count. and in which the count can be extended over the next few days.
In a short speech, Biden said that counting the votes may take time, but “it is not my job, nor Donald Trump’s, to say who won the election.” During the opponent’s speech, Trump, pushing for a quick definition of the election, tweeted: “We are doing VERY WELL, but they (the Democrats) will try to STEAL the election.”
The first hours after the polls closed on Tuesday (11/03) showed that the election would not be a failure for either party. Trump, who is running for re-election, took the lead in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas, four states in which he won in 2016.
The triumph of the Republican in these areas is considered crucial for him to remain competitive in the US electoral college. Biden leads the way in Arizona, who voted for Trump in 2016.
In the US, the vote is indirect and the candidate who adds at least 270 of the 538 delegates in dispute wins the Presidency.
According to the projection made by BBC News Brazil of the polls in the States, as of 3:52 am on November 4 (Brasilia time), Biden had 220 delegates against Biden’s 213.
The 2020 elections are unprecedented in the country for several reasons. The covid-19 pandemic prompted 101 million Americans to vote early, more than 60 million by mail, a record.
Furthermore, the projection of electoral participation is the highest in more than 100 years. About 67% of voters, or 160 million people, went to the polls this year. In the US, voting is not mandatory.
The electoral process is not centralized and each state has its own – and different – rules to conduct the process, which explains why the rate of dissemination of the results is so diverse.
Florida and Texas should stay for Trump, Arizona for Biden
In Florida, with 94% of the votes counted, Trump not only seemed on course to repeat his 2016 victory, but could significantly widen the margin over the Democratic opponent, from 1.2% to 3.5% of the vote. .
Florida, known for being a pendulum state, has received a lot of attention from both candidates. Trump held several rallies there, Biden did as well, and he took former President Barack Obama with him.
Trump’s biggest margin victory in the state would be explained mainly by his performance in the Latino areas. Trump managed to improve his vote in these groups by more than 10 percentage points compared to four years ago.
The large Cuban community and the Venezuelan diaspora, who see the Republican as a barrier to the advance of the left in Latin America and a force capable of leading the Nicolás Maduro regime in Venezuela to a transition of power, contributed especially to the result.
Last month, Trump gave a special nod to these voters by sending his secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, to visit Venezuelan refugees in the Brazilian state of Roraima.
Florida Republican Party Chairman Joe Gruters made his enthusiasm clear to CBS News in a statement, even before the end of the count: “We crushed the Democrats, our voters turned out to vote hard. This was a team victory. and a great day for Florida. “
Trump also appears to have been successful in blocking a Democratic victory in Texas. The state has largely not voted for Democrats since 1976, but it has undergone a significant shift in its demographics: The electorate is becoming less rural and white and increasingly urban and racially diverse, a profile that tends to favor the Democrats.
With 94% of the votes counted, Trump is expected to take all 38 delegates up for grabs in Texas, but Biden reduced the Republican lead in 2016. The seizure was such that on the eve of the election the Republican campaign tried, without success. , invalidating 127 thousand votes cast at a particularly Democratic polling station in Houston.
But Biden’s biggest win must be Arizona. With 80% of the count completed, the Democrat led by nearly six points. And although the state guarantees only 11 delegates, it would be the first to change sides compared to 2016.
‘Get some sleep guys and keep calm’
Although President Trump said throughout election day that “Americans have the right to have the result in a few hours,” until the early hours of the 4th, nothing pointed to this outcome.
In decisive states, such as Michigan (16 delegates) and Pennsylvania (20 delegates), as of midnight, the count had not exceeded 50% of the polls. In Wisconsin (10 delegates), just over 60% had been raised. The authorities of these states reported that definitive results should not be expected in the next few hours.
And despite the positive trend toward Trump in Georgia (16 delegates), trouble counting about 20% of the state’s votes in Atlanta, the majority Democratic capital, may still lead to a Democratic turn.
“Get some sleep, folks. We had a peaceful election day. The votes were cast. And local election officials are working to count the ballots. As we said months ago: This election will end when all the votes are counted. Keep calm.” . Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvania Attorney General, recommended on Twitter around midnight in Washington DC
At approximately 1 a.m. on Wednesday (11/04), Democrat Biden made a brief statement at the Wilmington, Delaware, convention center. “We feel very good about where we are. We believe we are on track to win this election. We know that from the unprecedented amount of early votes, votes by mail, this (vote) would take a while, and we will be patient.” Biden said, adding: “We can have the results as early as tomorrow morning, but it may take a little longer and it is not my job or Donald Trump’s to say who won the election, that’s the job of the American people.” .
The Democratic campaign move was an attempt to prevent the Republican from declaring himself the winner before the vote counting ended. A report from the US website Axios said Monday that the White House was debating this possibility.
As Biden spoke, Trump took to Twitter and said, “We are doing VERY WELL, but they (the Democrats) are going to try to STEAL the election. We are not going to let them do that. You cannot vote after the polls have finished. closed”.
Trump has spent the last few months saying that the mail-order system is fraudulent, although there is no evidence of relevant fraud related to this type of voting in the country. And he has said that he will go to court to prevent postal votes that arrive after the third day from being considered, even in those states where by law letters with votes can arrive late.
This is the case in hotly contested Pennsylvania, where mail-in votes are expected up to 3 days after Tuesday. Twitter marked Trump’s message with the following warning: “Some or all of the content shared in this tweet is controversial and may be misleading about the election or other civil process.”
