Eifel GP: Hamilton wins at Nürburgring and equals Schumacher’s record for F1 wins | Formula 1

[ad_1]

Lewis Hamilton wrote another chapter on his glorious career on Sunday when he won the Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring and equaled Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 victories in Formula One history. Towards the seventh championship, the Englishman from Mercedes took the lead on lap 13 of the 60 after an error by his teammate Valtteri Bottas.

The Finn then retired with engine problems, and RBR’s Max Verstappen inherited second place. After controlling the lead for most of the race, Hamilton lost the lead over Max with a safety car driveway to remove Lando Norris’s car from McLaren. At the restart, Lewis held the lead, did the fastest lap four times and confirmed the victory; on the last lap, the Dutchman made the best lap, snatching the extra point from the Englishman.

Hamilton will have the first chance to be the F1 winners record holder in two weeks, at the Portuguese Grand Prix in Portimão.

Daniel Ricciardo had an excellent race and finished third. It is his first podium for Renault and the first for his team since returning to F1 in 2016. The Australian resisted an attack from Sergio Pérez, who crossed the finish line at Racing Point.

Points also scored, from fifth to tenth place, Carlos Sainz Jr. (McLaren), Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri), Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Nico Hulkenberg (Racing Point), Romain Grosjean (Haas) and Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo).

After the race, Mick Schumacher, son of Michael Schumacher and reserve driver for Alfa Romeo, presented Lewis Hamilton with a helmet from his father. The piece is a replica of the one Schumi wore in 2012, the seven-time F1 champion’s final year. Interestingly, the German was replaced at Mercedes by Hamilton.
