Bus driver who collapsed in João Monlevade will clarify what caused the accident that left at least 19 dead

The driver of the bus that collapsed on a flyover on the banks of BR-381, in João Monlevade, in the central region of Minas, presented himself to the police on Monday afternoon (7). Luiz Viana de Lima escaped unharmed from the accident that left 19 dead when he managed to jump off the bus.

The tragedy occurred last Friday (4) and, since then, he has been missing. According to the Civil Police, the driver showed up at the Minas Gerais city police station around 2 in the afternoon, and about an hour later began to provide clarification on the case.

With the deposition, the corporation hopes to clarify what caused the bus to fall from a height of 35 meters. Mechanical failure and vehicle maintenance error are some of the hypotheses put forward by disaster survivors.

In a statement, the police said that a representative of Localima, responsible for the bus, also provided clarification about the company. “The content of the depositions will not be disclosed in compliance with the provisions of the Abuse of Authority Law,” he emphasized.

In total, 16 people were heard in the investigation of the causes of the accident. So far, there is no information on whether the driver will remain free during the investigation process or if he will be jailed. No one is trapped by tragedy.

According to the Civil Defense of Mines, 48 ​​people were on the tourist bus that left Mata Grande, in Alagoas, bound for São Paulo, when the bus fell from “Ponte Torta.” In addition to the 19 dead, 23 other people were injured in the accident.

Ten victims remain hospitalized, seven at the Margarida Hospital, in João Monlevade, two at the Hospital de Pronto-Socorro João XXIII, in Belo Horizonte, and one at the Hospital João Paulo II, also in the capital of Minas Gerais. Fifteen passengers were discharged and three did not need medical attention.

During the weekend, the BH Medical-Legal Institute (IML) recognized the bodies of all the dead and, this afternoon, two planes of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) departed from the Pampulha airport for the city of Paulo Afonso. , in Bahia, from where they will continue to Mata Grande, city of Alagoas.

In addition to the remains of the victims, the survivors were also transported by the aircraft.
