A driver ran over and killed a cyclist in the early hours of Sunday (8) on Avenida Paulo VI, in the west of São Paulo, and fled without providing help.
The scene was witnessed by an off-duty military police officer, who saw a silver-colored Hyundai Tucson with a Campinas license plate flee the crash site. Marina Kohler Harkot, 28, could not withstand the impact and died on the spot.
The case was registered in the 14th Police District (Pinheiros).
A cyclist, feminist and researcher of urban mobility, Harkot had the bicycle as his main means of transport. In 2018, she obtained a master’s degree from the University of São Paulo, with the dissertation “The bicycle and women: active mobility, gender and socio-territorial inequalities in São Paulo”.
She was also coordinator of Ciclocidade (Association of Urban Cyclists of SP), taught at the Escola da Cidade and was a project consultant at the World Bank, as well as being part of the Municipal Council of Transit and Transportation.
From January to September of this year, 567 people died in traffic in the city of São Paulo, according to information from Infosiga of the São Paulo government. Of this total, 24 were cyclists.
The trampling provoked reactions from activists and politicians. The mayoral candidate Jilmar Tatto (PT) stated that “the city loses a lot with his death.”

Ciclocidade (Association of Urban Cyclists of SP), in a note, said: “May the smile and the claw and Marina be with everyone in this moment of mourning.”
In 2011, businessman Antonio Bertolucci passed away at the age of 68 after being run over by a tourist bus while riding a bicycle at the access handle to av. Paul VI, in the same region where Harkot died this Sunday.
Bertolucci was a shareholder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Grupo Lorenzetti, a manufacturer of showers and showers.
