SÃO PAULO – In a fall in the polls due to the intention to vote in the city of São Paulo, the candidate Celso Russomanno (Republicans) will open a new flank and focus the fire on Guilherme Boulos (PSOL). In recent weeks, the campaign has focused on attacks on Mayor Bruno Covas (PSDB), which have had no effect. According to allies, the idea now is to focus on Boulos, third in the polls, and on the rise.
The intention is not to lose the position in the second round. In the next few days, Russomanno is scheduled to broadcast a video that will be a kind of “denial” of the case of a supermarket cashier who says he was humiliated by him in 2006. The episode was explored by Boulos, who met with the employee . The investigation of the internal campaign identified that the episode went viral in the periphery, where it had bad repercussions for Russomanno.

The idea of the campaign is to neutralize Boulos’s offensive and say that the employee was manipulated:
– Manipulating the humble is as ugly as invading the home – says activist Elsinho Mouco, alluding to Boulos’ role as leader of the Movement of Homeless Workers (MTST).
On Thursday night, Russomanno already posted news clippings on social media linking Boulos, among other issues, to the MST invasions.
According to the most recent Datafolha survey, Covas is numerically ahead with 23%. Russomanno fell from 27% to 20%; Only behind is Boulos at 14%, with a bullish bias. On another front, the Republican candidate will work to glue Boulos’s image to former President Lula. The PT did not declare its support for Boulos, and his party’s candidate is Jilmar Tatto, who did not take off at the polls. Still, he sympathizes with Boulos’s candidacy. The same file was used against Covas in attacks that associate his image with Governor João Doria (PSDB).
The tactic is to link candidates with the rejection of political backers. Datafolha points out that 53% would not vote for a candidate supported by Lula. Another 60% would not go to the polls in favor of Doria’s allies; and 63% would not vote for those nominated by President Jair Bolsonaro.
When asked about Boulos’ growth, Russomanno said it was “predictable”:
– I think it is normal because there are people from the left who are gathering around his candidacy.
Another strategy changed by Russomanno refers to the support of Bolsonaro during election hours. The campaign reduced the mention of the president. The intention is to modulate the presence of the political godfather, in an attempt to stop the fall of Russomanno and contain the increase of his rejection. Still, the president is expected to register next week with the Republican mayoral candidate.
