Governor João Doria (PSDB) will announce the extension of the quarantine in the state of São Paulo due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is already the second extension of the quarantine that began on April 7 in the 645 municipalities of the state. The state records 853 deaths from Covid-19 and 11,568 confirmed cases of contamination.
The quarantine was scheduled to end on April 22. With the extension, the details of the duration period should be disclosed on the afternoon of this Friday (17) during a press conference at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes, in the South Zone of São Paulo.
The measure requires the closure of trade and maintains only essential services, such as in the areas of Health and Safety.
The extension of the quarantine occurred due to the increasing number of cases of contamination and registered deaths, in addition to the low level of social isolation of the population, which is 50%, according to the monitoring system that uses cell phone signals to find out if people are at home and locate crowds. Infectologist David Uip, coordinator of the Coronavirus Contingency Center in São Paulo state, said this morning that planning against the disease began in February and that the peak should be in May. “The ascension curves are the expected and even better than we imagined because we understand that with this social distance it was possible to flatten, at the beginning, the ascension curve and decrease the number of infected. We are waiting for this peak to occur and the challenge is it’s not a peak of Mount Everest but a mountain peak, “he said. “We are on the rise of the curve, but that week of May will peak, we are still working on the data.”
According to him, the virus is concentrated in the São Paulo metropolitan region. Uip reinforced the need for social isolation to reduce the impacts on health units, especially on the public network. “The population needs to be convinced that distance is absolutely essential. First, because it improves by decreasing the rate of transmissibility, then it decreases the rate of disease, but fundamentally it can impact less than 20% of the patients who will need to be hospitalized and the 5% who go to the ICU ”

When the beds are empty, they are made available to the Health Services Regulation Center, which will direct new cases to occupy these three beds. Finally, this movement lasts up to 12 hours, “says the director of the Emílio Ribas Institute of Infectology, Luiz Carlos Pereira Junior.
