São Paulo Governor João Doria (PSDB) said today that China has launched a new batch of 5,600 liters of supplies for the production of CoronaVac, the vaccine against covid-19 developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac and manufactured in Brazil. , by the Butantan Institute. According to Dimas Covas, president of the institute, this amount of raw material is enough to produce 8.7 million doses.
The batch is added to what is expected to arrive this Wednesday (3) night at the Viracopos airport, in Campinas. There are 5,400 liters of IFA (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient) from the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac, which are already in the Beijing airport, awaiting the final shipping procedures, according to the São Paulo government.
The Butantan Institute estimates that this batch of supplies yields around 8.6 million doses.
With both batches, 17.3 million new doses of CoronaVac could be produced. According to Dimas Covas, the doses will begin to be available to the Ministry of Health until the first half of March.
What is already known about the CoronaVac deal:
- So far, Butantan has made 8.7 million doses of the vaccine available to be distributed by the PNI (National Immunization Program) against covid-19.
- The agreement with the federal government provides for the delivery of 46 million doses in a first stage.
- Another 54 million still need the signing of the contract between the Ministry and Butantan, which should happen this week, according to firms from the portfolio headed by Minister Eduardo Pazuello.
During the past week, the importation of supplies from China was the subject of a dispute between the São Paulo and federal governments, both of which claimed responsibility for releasing the raw material. Last Monday (25), President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) announced that the IFA approach would take place “in the next few days.” The next day, Doria called a press conference and then a meeting with Chinese Ambassador Yang Wanming.
Disagreements with the Ministry of Health
Although the vaccination is ongoing, the São Paulo government has disagreements with the Ministry of Health. Today, the executive director of the Covid-19 Contingency Center, João Gabbardo, criticized the federal government for, according to him, forcing the storage of second doses.
The government of São Paulo understands that it is urgent to vaccinate as many people as possible with the available doses. According to Gabbardo, with the announced guarantee that new supplies will arrive, there will be no shortage of doses until the maximum term of the second application, which is 28 days.
I would like to reinforce and renew an application that I already made. That the ministry make known as soon as possible the vaccines reserved for the second dose, so that we can accelerate the vaccination of the elderly. (…) The justification that existed, that we could be at risk by releasing all doses, no longer exists. (…) With the shipments of supplies that arrive in São Paulo, we can make a program in which vaccination is accelerated without running the risk of not having a second dose when necessary. Speeding up the process means changing the indicators.

João Doria also lobbied the Ministry of Health for the PNI to rapidly include new age groups for the elderly. Currently, only dates are foreseen for the vaccination of those over 85 years of age.
“If the federal government does not confirm this position to protect the elderly, São Paulo will vaccinate in the state program. We did it with quilombolas, which the government removed from the national program. We have already finished immunizing quilombolas here. We will do the same with the elderly population If we do not have confirmation from the federal government, São Paulo will not stop vaccinating those over 70 years of age, ”promised Doria, who included the quilombolas in the first phase of vaccination of the PEI (State Immunization Program).
For now, São Paulo has scheduled the start of vaccination for those over 90 years of age on February 8. And for February 15 the immunization of those between 85 and 89 years.
Today, Doria’s team changed the phrase displayed in the pulpits where the participants of the collective are. Before it was # VacinaJá. Now, #VacinaParaTodos.
