São Paulo Governor João Doria (PSDB) said today that, in October, São Paulo will receive 5 million doses of Coronavac, a covid-19 vaccine developed by the Butantan Institute in partnership with China’s Sinovac Biotech.

“By December, we will have 46 million doses of the vaccine in SP,” added the governor in an Instagram post.

He shared a story explaining that, once in Brazil, the vaccine will be packaged and ready for application after approval by Anvisa.

The association also foresees the transfer of technology to allow the production of vaccines at the Butantan Institute, to reduce import demand if the immunizer proves to be efficient.

Doria continued: “Testing continues with volunteer doctors and nurses in six states and soon, if everything goes according to plan, we will be able to immunize millions of Brazilians.”

100 million doses by May

São Paulo Health Secretary Jean Gorinchteyn added that in addition to the doses already announced by Doria, more doses are expected to arrive in the first months of 2021. “We will have 15 million more for the first quarter, totaling 61 million and until May we will have a total of 100 million doses, “he said in an interview with CNN Brazil this Sunday.

“And in this way, we will start the vaccination in December, or at the latest in January,” he added.

He said that vaccination should be done in two doses, so it is necessary to consider that 100 million doses will be applied to 50 million people.

“This vaccine is being evaluated by a technical chamber and is likely to follow the same pattern as vaccination against influenza. Therefore, priority groups that are at risk of developing the most severe forms of the disease will go first.”

When asked if the doses would be restricted to the state of São Paulo, he answered no. “This will be directed to the Unified Health System for all Brazilians. That is why we are counting on the support of the Ministry of Health so that we can vaccinate more and more Brazilians,” he said.
