The governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), said he recognized that restrictive measures to combat the coronavirus are harsh on merchants, but called for the guidelines to be followed to control the pandemic.
In an interview with Rádio Band News FM, Doria also said that “the dead do not consume”, reinforcing his understanding that the loss of life in the pandemic has a great impact on the economy.
“I know it is difficult, complex, I know it is very difficult for a merchant, a bar owner, a restaurant owner, a small business owner to maintain it. But I want to remember that the dead do not consume, the dead do not go to bars, the dead do not go to restaurants, the dead do not buy bread and the dead do not consume shoes. We have to preserve lives to recover the economy later. That we will do, it will happen “, he said.
The state of São Paulo this week began more restrictive measures to control the pandemic. The decision generated criticism from associations of affected sectors such as restaurants and bars.
The capital of São Paulo, for example, is under the rules of the orange phase of the SP Plan from Monday to Friday, but during the weekend and from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day, the red phase is in force.
For Doria, the control of the pandemic does not depend only on the measures and guidelines of the government, but on the conscience of each one.
“As long as the vaccine is not available to all Brazilians, we must all have the conscience, the patience, the resistance that we need to protect ourselves. There will be no police, there will not be enough supervision to ensure that those who disobey the guide to guarantee the life of each one to be punished. I find it incomprehensible that a person wants to die, that facilitates the circumstances to die. You have to exalt life, protect life and understand what will happen, “he said. said.
In this sense, Doria avoided saying that there are other possibilities for stricter restrictions when asked directly about ‘what cards up its sleeve’ the government would have to reduce the movement of people.
“The government has life up its sleeve. Each person is responsible for their own life. The responsibility of living or not in a pandemic circumstance rests with each person, who understands that wearing a mask protects their life, that of their family members. and friends, that social distance and non-participation in events protect lives ”.
