The governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB) announced today that the first 120,000 doses of the Coronavac vaccine will arrive in the state on November 20. According to the governor, a total of 6 million doses of the immunizing agent used against the new coronavirus are expected by December 30.
Coronavac is in phase 3 testing, which has not yet finished. The application of the doses, which arrive ready, depends on the approval of Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency). In case of failure, these 6 million doses cannot be applied.
“The vaccine will only be made public after final authorization [da Anvisa]”, reiterated the governor.
“This date is confirmed. Anvisa had already authorized [a importação]”Doria promised.” Now, China’s health authorities have authorized the import by the Butatan Institute. “
The vaccines that will arrive at the end of December are part of the 46 million doses purchased by the São Paulo government.
The first 6 million doses arrive ready from China and will be stored under the responsibility of the Butantan Institute. For security reasons, the state does not say where they will be stored.
Regarding the rest of the vaccines, São Paulo will receive the supplies and technicians from the Butantan Institute to process CoronaVac in the national laboratories.
The director of the Butantan Institute, Dimas Covas, stated that the first batch of supplies is expected to arrive on November 27. Production, according to him, will begin 48 hours after the arrival of the raw material.
The shipment will be enough to manufacture 1.2 million vaccines. The acquisition of the 46 million vaccines cost US $ 90 million (around R $ 479 million).
Factory
In addition to the arrival of CoronaVac, which is produced in partnership with the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinova, Doria reported that on November 2 work began on the 10,000 m² factory for the production of Coronavac.
According to the governor, the unit’s production capacity will be 100 million dose of the vaccine against the new coronavirus. In the future, the facility may produce other immunizers.
It is a facility that already existed, it is being remodeled. And there we will have the production of vaccines in Brazil. The forecast is 10 months of work and the factory will be in September 2021 ”.
João Doria
With works scheduled for completion in September 2021, local dose production will only be possible after 2022. Until then, Butantan will receive ready doses from China or raw materials to finalize production in the country. The production phase in Brazil involves formulation, packaging and labeling.
The 40 million doses will not be made in this factory, but in other units of the Butantan Institute. For this reason, the works do not interfere with the vaccine production schedule.
The renovation of the Butantan plant is estimated at R $ 160 million and a large part of the funds will come from private donations.
