Bishop Dom Eusébio Scheid died on Wednesday (13), at the age of 88, in São José dos Campos (SP) from complications caused by the Covid-19 infection.
The death was reported by the Diocese of São José, which reported in a note that he died after days of hospitalization at the São Francisco Hospital, in Jacareí. According to the diocesan note, he had contracted severe pneumonia.
Dom Eusébio Oscar Scheid was the first bishop of the diocese of São José dos Campos appointed in 1981, and since 2001 he has been archbishop emeritus of Rio de Janeiro.
According to the Diocese of São José dos Campos, due to the pandemic there will be no funeral or mass open to the public.

Dom Eusébio was born in Luzerna (SC) on December 8, 1932. He completed his basic studies at the Seminary of the Fathers of the Heart of Jesus in Corupá (SC).
A religious of the Congregation of the Fathers of the Heart of Jesus (Dehonians), he made his vows on February 2, 1954. He studied Philosophy in Brusque (SC) in 1954 and at the Pontifical Gregorian University, in Rome, Italy, between 1955 and 1957 There, he studied theology. He was ordained an elder on July 3, 1960, in Rome, by Dom Inácio João Dal Monte, Bishop of Guaxupé.
He continued his graduate studies and received Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Christology.
With more than 60 years of ministry, Dom Eusébio fainda moved to other cities in the Paraíba Valley, such as Taubaté and Aparecida, was an advisor to the Pontifical Commission for Latin America in the Vatican and served in the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB ).
