Novak Djokovic had just had his serve broken in the match against Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta and, furious, he sent the ball hard towards the back of the court (see the videos below). The hopscotch hit the linesman’s face, who immediately fell to the ground. The officer was answered and left the court. The president then described the scene to the tournament supervisor, who decided to immediately disqualify the world number 1. The Spaniard, who led 6/5 in the first set and would serve to close the set, advanced to the US Open quarterfinals.
Until just before the incident, Novak Djokovic was doing well in the game. He had a chance to break in the eighth game and three more (0/40) in the tenth game, but Carreño Busta was saved with a solid and impeccable tennis whenever he needed it. However, when he tied 5/5, Djokovic suffered a fall and went for immediate medical attention, complaining of pain in his left shoulder. The Serbian returned to the game serving 0/30 and played three points trying to define quickly. First, he threw a ball into the net. Two points later, his serve was broken. It was at this point that he threw the ball hard toward the back of the court.
Carreño Busta, currently number 27 in the world, now hopes to meet his next rival, who will leave the match between Belgian David Goffin and Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
In the round of 16, Djokovic was the only slam champion in the curriculum. Roger Federer, injured, and Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka, concerned about the pandemic, did not go to New York. Andy Murray was eliminated in the second round, and Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, was overtaken by Dominic Thiem last Saturday night.
