Coach Fernando Diniz, from São Paulo, praised the team’s performance in the 1-1 draw with Internacional, this Saturday, in Beira-Rio, for the 12th round of the Brazilian Championship.
– Today the team played very well. Not just with an extra player. At that time there was only one team playing. But even when it was 11 against 11 we had almost complete control of the game, creating more chances. We deserved to win. You have to try to play well. We know the strength of River. We played a good game in São Paulo and we will need to improve to increase the chances in Argentina – said Fernando Diniz.
Tricolor had one more player 14 minutes into the second half, when Inter’s Zé Gabriel was sent off.
– The fact that (Inter) had one less Sao Paulo was not effective, but he knew how to take advantage of that. He pushed Inter back. Scoring the goal is not necessarily easier with one more. From there, Inter abdicated attacking. He played with the line nine and the goalkeeper in 15 meters. Even so, the team created three clear scoring chances. Unfortunately we could not score, to be more effective on the occasions we create, analyzed the coach.
– Defensively we did well at 11 x 11. Inter’s goal was a sporadic play, a play in which there is normally no goal. An intersection of the middle. Great header from Galhardo. We scored very well. We offer few opportunities. The only clear thing was the impediment that Volpi made to the defense. The team showed evolution and that shows that we arrived strong, at a good moment, to face River, in this great challenge on Wednesday – he added.

Diniz also commented on the protests of the crowd about the shipment from São Paulo to Porto Alegre (Look the following video).
– Yesterday we had this situation, and the team responded with what it did today. The team responded well. This type of questioning is normal in Brazil. I don’t think the pressure is due to the LDU game. What pressures São Paulo at that moment are the defeats against Binacional, in height, and especially against Mirassol. We have to know. The pressures are fair. The fan has every right to be dissatisfied. This will only end when you continue to play well, like today, and win the games – said Diniz.
After the draw with Inter, São Paulo remains in Porto Alegre, where they will train on Sunday and Monday. Then the team embarks for Argentina, where it will face River Plate, on Wednesday, for the Libertadores.
Best moments of the International 1 x 1 São Paulo for the 12th day of the Brazilian Championship
To qualify and stay alive in the competition, São Paulo needs:
- Win River Plate in Argentina, on the 30th;
- He wins the Binational, in Morumbi, on October 20, and has a stumbling block from River Plate against LDU, in Argentina. A Tricolor draw combined with a River loss to LDU will also do the trick. In the event of River’s victory, the team would have to carry a difference of 11 goals on the balance sheet.
