The devotees of Nossa Senhora Aparecida celebrate this Monday, October 12, the Day of the Patroness of Brazil. Even without mass in person due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Basilica of Aparecida (SP) should receive thousands of pilgrims.
This year, the largest Marian temple in the world, which usually attracts thousands of faithful on October 12, changed the Covid-19 prevention program. The main change is that the faithful will not be able to attend mass in person.
The celebrations will be broadcast on the Internet. The main mass of the day occurs at 9 am and will be presided over by Archbishop Orlando Brandes of Aparecida. Masses are also scheduled at 7 am, 12 pm and 6 pm.

Even without being able to participate in the masses, thousands of pilgrims must visit the National Shrine on October 12. The day before, the temple was very busy with the arrival of the pilgrims.
The Basilica will allow the visit to spaces that tend to attract many devotees, such as passing through the Image of the Saint in the niche, Capela das Velas and Sala das Promessas. The sites will have constant flow control and hygiene.
The ticket to see the Image of the Saint in the niche, for example, will be restricted to about 50 people at a time. The devotee may also stay for only about three minutes in the place.

The Basilica of Aparecida can receive six thousand people simultaneously. According to municipal decree, the temple can provide 35% of the spaces for vehicles, the equivalent of two thousand spaces, for a total of six thousand people in the complex.
When the two thousand parking spaces are reached, the entrance doors will be closed until part of this public leaves. Buses are prohibited from entering the parking lot.
The National Shrine of Aparecida has not announced an expectation of pilgrims for October 12 of this year. In 2019, 162,000 faithful passed through the temple on Patron’s Day.
