The Environment Minister, Ricardo Salles, said on Tuesday (8) that Brazil can anticipate a target set in the Paris Agreement of neutrality in the emission of gases that cause the greenhouse effect.
At the same time, Salles affirmed Brazil’s commitment to emissions neutrality by 2060, something that China also announced, for example.
The minister argues that the goal can be advanced, if developed nations fulfill the commitment to transfer at least US $ 10 billion annually to Brazil, something that Salles constantly demands.
The transfer of funds is provided for in the Paris Agreement. The document provides a mechanism for rich countries to invest in sustainable development policies of developing nations as a way to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
Salles spoke to the press after a meeting to approve the determined national contribution, a document that must be approved every five years with the new goals of the signatory countries of the Paris Agreement.
“If we receive this flow of financial resources, we will consider the possibility of making our commitment to neutrality in a shorter period. Therefore, once again Brazil is demonstrating its commitment to the climate issue,” he said.
The mechanism is intended as a way to help countries that have been working to reduce the emission of gases that are harmful to the environment.
In 2019, Brazil paralyzed the Amazon Fund, the largest international cooperation project to preserve the Amazon rainforest. The collaboration, which in ten years donated R $ 3.1 billion to the cause, from Germany and Norway, was frozen after Salles said that there would have been problems in the NGOs that received funds from the fund, administered by BNDES.
This year, Brazil faced growth in deforestation in both the Amazon and the Pantanal.
Deforestation in the Amazon grew by 9.5% from August 2019 to July 2020 compared to the previous period, from 2018 to 2019. In total, 11,088 km² of forest were cut down in this time interval despite the presence of the Army in the forest, under Operation Green Brazil 2.
