The deputy delegate of the Homicide Police, Pedro Casaes, who is investigating the murder of Judge Viviane Vieira do Amaral, 45, in Rio de Janeiro, said he believed the crime was premeditated. The engineer Paulo José Arronenzi, her ex-husband, was arrested on the spot.

According to the delegate, Arronenzi, who was unemployed, blackmailed the magistrate, to whom he was married for ten years.

“He marked on this street, which is not very busy, it was a rainy day. There were not many witnesses. We believe that it was premeditated and that it was not just a crime of passion. He was unemployed so he was very interested in his financial condition” He blackmailed her , I wanted more and more money, ”Casaes explained in an interview with Fantástico, from TV Globo, broadcast yesterday.

The engineer chose to remain silent when questioned in the Homicide capital.

According to Fantástico, his ex-girlfriend filed a complaint in 2007 because he had scratched her car and did not accept the end of the relationship.

The businesswoman helped the judge’s daughters

TV Globo also interviewed businesswoman Daiane de Oliveira, who helped the judge’s daughters, 7-year-old twins and a 9-year-old girl, at the time of the crime. They screamed and asked the father to stop assaulting the mother.

The magistrate was struck by 16 stab wounds and died after cutting the jugular vein located in his neck, according to a report from the IML (Medical Legal Institute).

Daiane owns a restaurant on the street where the crime occurred. A customer who was leaving saw the scene, yelled for help and the businesswoman ran to try to help.

“When I went downstairs, she was already lying on the ground with her daughters crying. The first reaction I had was to pick them up and take them out so they wouldn’t see what was happening and also was afraid that her father would do something with them,” she said.

He also said that he asked the attacker how he had the courage to do that in front of his daughters.

‘We don’t want death to be in vain’

Judge Renata Lima, a friend of Viviane, described her as a sweet, serene and human person. He said Viviane texted a group of friends three hours before she was murdered wishing her a Merry Christmas.

“(He) didn’t seem like a person who could do something like this. He was a fun person, a good-natured person, a nice company at parties,” he said of the engineer.

Renata said that she hoped her friend’s death was not in vain. “That it helps women become aware of all this, cycles of domestic violence, that they cannot be ashamed to seek help, that is our wish.”

How to report

Brazil is the fifth country where the majority of women are victims of femicide.

Have you ever suffered an assault and want to report it? File a domestic violence report at any police station. If you can, find a women’s police station that specializes in these types of cases.

Do you know a woman in danger? Call 180. The federal government channel is open 24 hours a day, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The call is anonymous and the central office provides legal and psychological guidance and forwards the investigation request to women’s defense organizations, such as the Public Ministry.

In an emergency, it is possible to call 911 and call the police.
