Deiveson reveals that he went to the hospital hours before the fight at UFC 256: “I came with a belly full of wind” | combat

An important fact was revealed by Deiveson Figueiredo in the interview he gave shortly after the end of the fight last Saturday, at UFC 256, after the tie with Brandon Moreno that kept him with the flyweight belt (up to 56.7kg). According to the 32-year-old parishioner, hours before the fight he had to be hospitalized for complications in the abdomen region. Already in the early hours of Saturday in Las Vegas, Deiveson found the fight at risk.

– (…) Until last night I had an intestinal infection and until 2 in the morning I was in the hospital, and I came to the fight with a windy stomach and I didn’t know if I would fight well. It was a tough fight until the end, but I won, even with a broken stomach I came here and won, I defended what is mine, I gave my blood with honor and I left with my arms raised. I really appreciate my team, I love you!

Contact the report Combat, the wrestler’s doctor, Dr. Lia Correia, explained what happened after the weigh-in on Friday, when Deiveson began to have problems during rehydration. It was his second weight cut in 21 days.

– What happened, right, I will only know when I return. He hit the weight very well, he was even below. But right after the first meal after weighing, she started having abdominal pain and bloating. We were very apprehensive, but we followed the rehydration protocol, he received colic and anti-gas medication, rested and went to fight. He was a true warrior! I could have given up. The staff, as always, were impeccable.

As highlighted by Dr. Lia Correia, who is the champion’s nutritionist in Belém, the UFC medical team released him to fight after the event and warned that more detailed examinations upon his return to Brazil will better tell what actually happened.

– Obviously we knew it was a risky strategy, from the beginning, when we accepted the fight. Although he felt bad, and obviously, this could hurt the outcome of the fight, he was in position to fight. We managed to get it back and the UFC medical team released it. He will undergo medical examinations, as we intend to have adequate rest time now (…). I do not rule out the possibility of intestinal problems, athletes who make brutal weight cuts, as is the case with him, are beyond normal physiology. MMA as a science is still very incipient. We are in continuous learning. And evolving.

UFC president Dana White said at the press conference after UFC 256 that he was at risk of losing the main event, but that he left the decision to Deiveson and his team.

– Whenever a boy goes to the hospital, you are in danger. Obviously, we gave you (the option), whether you wanted to fight or not, you decide. He was obviously released medically, but he had a choice to fight or not, and he wanted to fight.

Discount points and rematch

Still in the interview on the official UFC broadcast, Deiveson commented on the deduction of a point made by referee Jason Herzog after the fighter fired a kick in Moreno’s genital region. The Brazilian understood the decision.

– The referee played his role, I connected a finger to Moreno’s eye and the kick unfortunately went down, although I didn’t want to, and the referee played his role. But even taking the point, I decided to go out there and knock him out, but I couldn’t, and thank God it went to the end and gave this show to the audience that is used to seeing my fights being decided in the first round. If we pass the first round, we will fight all five rounds to the end, I just leave there on a stretcher.

Deiveson, who now has a lineup of 20 wins, draw and loss, has already made himself available for a possible rematch with Brandon Moreno, but warned that this time he needs more time to recover and then prepare.

– If you want to put it on again, you can be sure that this time I will make the correct throw to neutralize his game. I’m here for whatever Dana wants me to do, I’m available. I stayed to defend pay-per-view, I had to gain weight in less than 20 days to put on this show. Dana, I’m at your disposal, if you want to have a rematch you can do it, and I’m going home to enjoy my family a bit. Let me breathe a little bit that the machine needs (laughs).

At a press conference, Dana White confirmed her interest in attending a new meeting between the Brazilian and the Mexican, this time in 2021 and with time to prepare.

– We have to give these guys a break. But absolutely, positively, you do this rematch. This is another fun fight for all of us looking forward to in 2021.
